Youth without Youth (2007) - Francis Ford Coppola's directorial "comeback

After a 10-year hiatus, Francis Ford Coppola is finally coming back to the director's chair. The movie is set during World War II. Word is it’s mostly a romance with some thriller vibes, and Tim Roth is taking the lead. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script himself, based on—if I remember right—a novella by Mircea Eliade that I haven't heard of before. Thoughts? What are you guys expecting...

The guy is a genius. Seriously, the whole Coppola clan—from Sofia all the way down to Nicolas Cage—is legendary.

So there's a good chance this turns out to be another hit.

I mean, the man did make the greatest trilogy of all time, after all.

Everything sounds great in theory, but honestly, Tim? There are so many better, younger actors out there. I just can't bring myself to sit through it. The story itself could be absolutely fantastic, but Tim, I feel like some people just have zero sense of aesthetics,
on top of that, everything else seems perfect to me.

I need to actually sit down and watch the film first—assuming it even makes its way to our local theaters one day—before I can offer any real judgment, but the concept itself sounds incredibly compelling... 🙂

Tim 😲 are you crazy?!😲 I haven't heard of anyone better. Besides, who cares if an actor is pretty? I'm not trying to watch a fashion show, I want a solid movie with actual talent. Plus, we don't even know how "old" the character Tim Roth is playing yet...☕

For me, the first thing I look at is whether an actor is visually engaging, and he just doesn't hit that mark for me. Because of that, any romantic subplot involving him completely falls flat—it’s just not working. That’s just my take, but he doesn't have that leading man charisma, and if I can't buy into the character's profile, I just can't get immersed in the movie.
Sad but true.
There are plenty of actors out there who are stunning and incredibly talented—I'm not just talking about models here, but people who can actually project empathy. He just doesn't have that. He’s got that specific look for playing the bad guy, some kind of loose cannon, a bum, or just a total bore.

There are plenty of good-looking actors out there who can actually act, too. I'm not talking about supermodels, but people who can actually show empathy. He can't. He's got that face for a bad guy, or some psycho, or a bum, or just a total bore...

Give me a break. Nobody's saying beautiful actors aren't great (I think Hayden Christensen is pretty solid and charming, and Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing, not to mention Johnny Depp) but Tim Roth is an incredible actor who can play a villain or a hero without breaking a sweat. Looks don't matter if the acting is top-tier (like him🙂). Not good for a lead?!!!!😲 You gotta be kidding me. What about Little Odessa?😕

I’m just saying the movie could have been so much more beautiful. It lacks those sweeping, cinematic moments that really stick with you; you just can't
capture that magic with what we have here. I'm not saying his acting isn't solid or high-quality—it is—but it’s just not quite hitting the mark. It's not the kind of
scene that stays in your mind forever, and honestly, you couldn't put his face on the poster and expect people to feel that instant connection.
Does that make more sense now?

I mean, where would he even fit in that role? He’d be perfect as a father figure or maybe a close friend, but he just doesn't have the presence to carry the lead in a story like that.

One more thing—in Little Odessa, he played a cold-blooded, professional killer. It just goes to show exactly what kind of heavy-hitting roles he's capable of pulling off.

Tim Roth is a pro. He can handle just about any role🙂

And if there's barely any romance in Last Sign—like, almost none at the start—the movie isn't exactly a masterpiece, but whatever. It's just Tim Roth.

I only brought up Little Odessa because you said he wasn't cut out for a lead role.

The Legend of 1900—love portrayed with such incredible subtlety. Tim Roth is an actor, not some poster boy.
