I just don't get one thing here... why would a big-budget production claim Hattori Hanzo was the swordsmith? It feels pretty off, especially since anyone who actually knows anything about this stuff knows Hanzo has nothing to do with that. I highly doubt choosing that specific name was some kind of accident... does anyone else know what's going on? Maybe the film took some heat for it, because the mistakes are everywhere—just like seeing a jet flying in the background of Gladiator, for instance...

Look, I get it... it's just a modern adaptation built on those cheap trash movies they churned out back in the 80s or whatever. You know, those stuff where they film in Asia and then slap some English subtitles on it, making everyone sound like some random guy from a police academy training video. But even in those absolute trash gems, I've seen that certain names actually belong right where they are...

Back in the 80s, Sonny Chiba played Hattori Hanzo in the series "Kage no Gundan".
That’s why Tarantino decided to pay homage by naming his character Hattori Hanzo too, basically framing him as a distant descendant of the original legend.

Not really the point here... but whenever I think about Hostel, I can't shake the feeling that my little nephew could've made a better flick. For me, Kill Bill feels like that turning point between that total trash and his old good stuff like Reservoir Dogs...

Has anyone seen Shinobi? Was that filmed back in 2005? If so, what's the consensus?

Since Tarantino is such a massive fan of those kinds of flicks, there's no way he was making fun of Bruce Lee, Sergio Leone, Akira Kurosawa, or anyone else. Even if he knows plenty of those movies aren't exactly masterpieces—you know, like the total trash kung fu stuff or blaxploitation—he definitely respects them.

Besides, Kill Bill isn't some parody like Kung Fu Soccer; sure, it's over the top, but even that's just part of the whole homage thing.

As Roth explains, Tarantino is a huge supporter of rising filmmakers. He hosts these occasional "movie nights" where a bunch of up-and-coming directors head over to Tarantino's place to watch some classics. It's basically his way of firing them up and getting them hyped for their own upcoming projects. After seeing Roth's First feature, Cabin Fever, Tarantino invited Roth to one of those get-togethers and offered to lend a hand with Hostel.

IMO you're right... but IMO the guy had a hand in it too... I honestly don't get how he let them slap his name on that piece of junk... but hey, that's just my two cents.

Hey, I'm not judging if that kind of stuff works for you.
It didn't totally blow me away, though—mostly because I'm still holding out for a movie where ninjas are just regular people with some pretty wild (for a normal crowd) powers and skills.
Something more along the lines of The Last Samurai, just with a ninja twist 😁

And that’s only the first part. Honestly, there are eight films in the series, and I can only see myself getting through one—maybe two at most.
