So, I got hit by a semi on the interstate a few days ago, and honestly, the whole thing is a blur of being rushed into an ambulance and everything else—I remember it all vividly.
Then, out of nowhere, I just passed out and slept for two straight days.
Now I’m sitting here wondering: is it actually possible to sleep for two days straight without even realizing you're waking up? My nurse is trying to tell me it wasn't a coma, just some kind of "intense sleep"??!! Like, is that even a real thing?

Look, I know I’m totally out of my depth here since I don't know the first thing about this stuff, so feel free to ignore me🤔 but man, that sounds bizarre. You weren't in a coma, yet you were out cold for two whole days?!🙂 I honestly can't wrap my head around how someone can sleep that hard for forty-eight hours straight....
I really hope you're doing alright now... I mean, you literally got hit by a semi-truck.😲 ...geez. I just hope you can put this whole nightmare behind you soon, and hopefully some actual expert steps up to give you some real answers....

So, what did the doctors actually tell you???
I assume you at least consulted one of them, right???

They told me I wasn't in a coma since I was having frequent erections.
Though they did think it was pretty weird that someone could sleep that much without waking up once. I was all limp and unresponsive and everything, but absolutely zero movement.
Man, I'm doing alright now, just a little bruised and stuff, but I didn't really want to press them for more info because I was in such a rush to get back home and tackle my workload.

No, for real though, I got into a wreck near Venezuela on Monday, 19 miles way out of town where you hit the highway toward Trieste. Some truck decided to swerve right into my third lane like he owned the road.
Then I basically slept from Monday afternoon straight through until Wednesday around 6 PM.
I figured someone around here might actually know what they're talking about, so I thought I'd ask.

Figured if I posted here, maybe someone who actually knows their stuff would chime in.

Paul Cook33....first off, I am so sorry if I offended you. I was just joking around, but clearly, there's a time and a place... and this wasn't it. Seriously—forgive me. I'm just a huge jokester, don't hold it against me. Like I said before, I really hope someone with actual expertise can give you some answers. Wishing you a speedy recovery....

You didn't offend me at all... where on earth are you getting that from?!?? 😕
Look, if you're just joking, it's totally fine by me—honestly, I'm basically living for the sarcasm right now since I'm covered in bruises and wrapped up like a freaking mummy... 🤣🤣🤣
I guess it might come off a little intense when you read it, but I’m really not actually mad. 😘

I mean, look... it’s definitely not the time for jokes, especially when you're spinning out like that... but hey, at least you're still breathing. It could've been way worse.😱

My big question is, can you actually sleep for two days straight without even a hint of waking up? My nurse is telling me it wasn't a coma, just some kind of "deep sleep"??!! Is that even a real thing?

It’s definitely possible. You hear stories like this all the time when there's a "minor" brain injury involved. Since you mentioned your memory is totally intact, you probably didn't go into a coma, but it sounds like you might have dealt with what trauma specialists call concussion syndrome. Basically, your brain took a bit of a shake-up, and that period of "heavy sleeping" you're talking about is just your command center inside your skull trying to get everything back in order.
For that same reason—aside from the usual vivid dreams—I'd say those frequent erections during sleep can be explained too.
See, frequent erections can actually be a telltale sign of spinal cord lesions or spinal shock. So, in your case, it could easily be linked to that same "shaking up" of your spinal cord.

Since you mentioned you aren't having memory gaps, we can probably rule out a full-blown concussion, but you might be dealing with what some trauma specialists call concussion syndrome. Basically, your brain got a bit more of a "shake-up" than usual, and this heavy sleep you're describing is just your command center inside your skull trying to reboot and get everything back in order.
For the same reasons—besides the wet dreams—I’d say those frequent erections during sleep make sense too.
See, frequent erections are actually a regular sign of spinal cord lesions or spinal shock. So, in this case, it could be explained by a little bit of "shaking up" of the spinal cord as well.

Anyway, I'm doing alright now, just pretty banged up and covered in bruises. Even the scans—done on those machines, I don't know the names since I'm no doctor and have never had any reason to learn—showed that everything is fine (thank God) and that I'm cleared to go home.
But man, reading all that just made me feel crappy again... 😉
Jokes aside, thanks. 👍

No, seriously, the main thing is that you weren't in a coma, haha. Honestly, you should just be glad you have us forum folks to hang out with so you don't get too bored stuck out in the middle of nowhere...

I don't know—maybe they gave you some kind of sedative or something in your IV?

Nah, nothing to help me sleep. I actually checked with them before I headed out.

Maybe you just had a bit of a brain fog moment and slept right through everything.
I mean, I once pulled a solid 17-hour sleep session out of nowhere—not that I'm complaining, I love my sleep.🙂

Nezz... that sounds like an odd state to be in... perhaps you were in a stupor.
A stupor is essentially a quantitative disorder of consciousness. In a stuporous state, a patient behaves as if they are in a deep sleep; they respond very poorly to stimuli, usually only reacting briefly to intense provocation, often with incoherent verbal responses. Occasionally, orientation toward oneself (knowing who they are) and others (recognizing close family) might remain intact. Following a period of stupor, there is typically amnesia regarding that timeframe, or at best, a fragmented and hazy memory of events (such as knowing people were trying to wake them or calling their name). A stuporous state can manifest following severe head trauma, polytrauma, or serious instances of poisoning. The duration varies wildly, ranging from a few hours to several days, with recovery occurring or potentially progressing into a full coma. During a stupor, beyond identifying the immediate cause, it is vital to maintain continuous monitoring in an ICU setting, involving constant vitals tracking and consultation from various medical specialists.

So, you actually went through the trouble of registering just to scrape some content from Wikipedia and finally weigh in after more than four years? I guess that’s one way to make an entrance.
