Quick question,
I was driving and had to slam on the brakes—like, really hard—while I was picking up some decent speed.
The seatbelt yanked me so violently I actually lost my breath for a second (everything went black, blood pressure plummeted, blah blah blah).
I started feeling this ache in my solar plexus last night—you know, that area just below the chest?—but this morning it’s hurting like crazy. It doesn't hurt when I breathe, but any movement or direct pressure on the spot is brutal.

Is this normal? Like, is the pain just from the sudden jerk of the belt, or could there be something more serious going on? (Full disclosure: I’m a total panic attack prone person)

I honestly can't believe how ridiculous this sounds, but you really ought to head to an urgent care clinic and have them check out your neck just to be safe. It all comes down to how suddenly you jerked it and the sheer force of that impact; I remember once after a minor fender bender in Chicago, the pain didn't even register until hours later.
And those kinds of sudden jolts can definitely trigger intermittent headaches too. Are you actually able to turn your head or move your neck at all?

Honestly, I can twist it any way I want—it’s not even my neck that's the problem. It's more like that spot where the seatbelt caught me... you know, that specific bone right in the middle of my chest? It hits whenever I cough or strain myself too hard.

I wouldn't say it's anything too crazy, you probably just overstretched some ligaments. There's a tiny, tiny chance you might have cracked or fractured a rib, but honestly...

Or maybe it’s the sternum... but honestly, it feels more like just some nasty bruising to the skin, fat, and muscle, probably with a little hematoma kicking up.
Leda and DeepMind... 😍

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? It’s been two days since my car accident, and the aches and pains are only just starting to set in—which, frankly, is a bit unsettling. I’m starting to doubt whether this is just a standard whiplash situation; the impact from behind was pretty substantial, to say the least. What should my next move be here? Any advice on which specific referrals I should be asking my doctor for to get this properly looked at?

You should definitely head to a doctor, whether it’s the ER or your primary care physician, though I would personally suggest the emergency room. Once you explain the situation, any sensible doctor will order an X-ray with at least two views—AP and lateral—and perhaps an AP with an open mouth, though that requires a specific attachment that might not be necessary in your case.
The next step would be visiting an orthopedic specialist with those X-rays to complete any further imaging required by their facility's specific protocols.

And here’s the kicker...

We're looking at roughly $2,000 $1000 from the insurance payout, though it really depends on which adjuster handles your claim...
My best advice? Just gather up every single medical report you can find and make sure you collect every cent they owe you.

The only thing is, you might be running a little bit behind the curve on this one...

Seriously, don't mess around—go see a doctor.
I went through something similar where I just waited for the pain to go away, and ten days later, my arms and legs started tingling out of nowhere... 😢

It’s way better to get checked out now and confirm everything is fine than to deal with a nasty surprise down the road. 😢 Just take some time for yourself and get it sorted. Good luck.

The pain isn't even that intense, to be honest—it’s more about the awkwardness of bringing it up with my doctor. I really don't want her thinking I'm just some attention-seeker trying to claim disability benefits I clearly won't qualify for; after all, I didn't rush myself straight into the ER immediately after the accident, nor did I put on some dramatic performance involving clutching my neck and acting like the world was ending. It’s just... embarrassing. My main concern is actually just this lingering stiffness in my lower back area.

I’m actually sitting here reading this right now with a neck brace on, if you can believe it. I ended up heading straight to the ER because my head started spinning, though honestly, it felt more like pure stress than anything else. It was nothing like the day of the car accident, but then yesterday—just twenty-four hours later—everything just went south. Anyway, you really should just go to the emergency room on your own and tell them this is all a delayed reaction from that wreck a few days ago. It isn't even that weird, really, since these kinds of injuries have a way of showing up out of nowhere after a little while. My suggestion? Make sure you see a doctor who can actually map out a plan for you, but please, don't just settle for some general practitioner giving you a quick fix; get every single test and scan possible. Isn't a little bit of radiation worth it when you're talking about your actual health and peace of mind?

It’s just that my shoulder blades feel a bit stiff.

Look... getting hit in the back is no joke.

You really need to warm up that area, so maybe try heating up a heating pad or even just using a warm compress on your neck.
If you start feeling nauseous, get to a doctor immediately—that could be a concussion.
The pain might actually start ramping up soon, so if it doesn't let up in a few days, go see someone.

You can get referrals from your primary care physician at the local clinic.
Ask for a referral to a physical therapist and an orthopedist, though seeing the PT first might be the better move. 😉

Good luck, and hopefully it turns out you're totally fine and just lucky...

Ugh, I am so sorry. I'm glad you're okay, though—just take it easy.
You’re really looking at two different possibilities here:
1. Your muscles just seized up from the shock and are now starting to relax. If that's the case, you'll likely feel sore for about a week, and then everything should go back to normal.
2. You actually sustained whiplash or a neck injury, which can take a year or two to fully recover from.
My brother went through scenario two, and honestly, he still hasn't fully recovered, even though it happened three years ago.
I don't want to scare you, but you're definitely going to need a lot of patience.

How long does medical leave typically last for a whiplash injury? Working at a sewing machine can really mess with your cervical spine—especially after a head impact—so maybe we're looking at a 2-3 month recovery period?

Regarding Sandov's neck brace—where can one actually pick that up? Is it strictly through a doctor's referral, or can you just grab one directly from a pharmacy or an orthopedic specialist?

It’s not about that, though. I'm just worried because my hips feel really stiff.

At the end of the day, you only get one body, and doctors are literally there to help you. It's totally up to you how you handle it.😉

Look—I was told a Standard Oil collar runs about 50-$20, yet you see them in retail stores for upwards of $33. That’s the reality of it.

So, did you get yours through a fund?

Don't give me that—they’re claiming the collar isn't eligible for a tax exemption. I actually spotted someone wearing one near $27 Fifth Avenue by the Orthopedics clinic. At least there's some proof.
