How to trim an MP3 file?

Does anyone know how to slice up an mp3 file without totally killing the audio quality? I'm looking to break a track down into smaller chunks, but I need them to still sound smooth and natural. Is there a specific program out there that handles this well?

There are plenty out there. For instance, Audacity isn't free, though there are tons of free alternatives—I just don't recall the specific names since I stick to what I know. Google is your friend, isn't it? 🙂

Alright, I went ahead and downloaded it, but now I’m kind of stuck—how does this actually work? Like, if I just open up an mp3 file in there, what am I supposed to do next?

Basically, you just pick the segment you want, copy it over to a new file, and save it under a different name.
Most of these programs work pretty much the same way, don't they?

I don't even know what you're actually trying to achieve since there are plenty of ways to split a file.
Do you just need one snippet of a song, several parts with pauses in between, or a bunch of shuffled clips?.....

Anyway, whatever part you want to extract needs to be highlighted. Use the arrow to get to the waveform view—it turns into an "I" cursor—then just click and drag with the left mouse button to select your area.
Or, just go Edit > Select > ...... the rest is pretty self-explanatory.
Once you've got that selection, you can do whatever you want with it. You could delete everything except that part, for instance. Then, use the Time Shift tool (the left and right arrows) to slide that clip to the very beginning, save it, and you're done.

Alternatively, you could do this: while you have the existing track open, start a second one. (Project > New audio track). Take your selected bit from the first track, hit Copy, then Paste it into the new track.
From there, feel free to chop, dice, or mangle it however you see fit. 😁

Or you could just take the easy way out, though as they say, "when Nadalina's stirring the eggs..." 🙂

Gotcha, thanks! I'll give that a shot. Basically, I've got this 80-minute electronic set that I need to break down into smaller chunks so I can just skip straight to the parts I actually want to hear.

So, am I seriously lacking the option to just move the cursor around like you can in Winamp? It would be so much easier if I could actually see where I’m cutting, or at least have some kind of timestamp display so I can sync things up with Winamp to figure out exactly when to stop the file and kill it.

Oh, one more thing—how am I supposed to turn that trimmed file back into an MP3 if we're talking about a Winamp file in this scenario?

Man, I am in the exact same boat here. It is taking me forever to manually cut and paste these specific sections. Just check the Help menu—read a little.☕

But look, if you don't want to waste your precious time, just try this:
shift - plays the track
P - stops the track (and leaves the cursor right there)
then just use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the cursor forward or back
It couldn't be simpler 😉
plus everything is displayed numerically at the bottom (V1.3.0. beta)

To adjust the MP3 settings, go
Ctrl+P > tab File format > MP3 export setup

Look, you can probably save an mp3 using Word if you really want to—though I guess it might be a bit clunky—but maybe just try something simple like cool Edita instead. 😁
