So, are you guys pillow people or what? Personally, I don’t need one at all—honestly, they kind of get in my way. I haven't used one for years. If I do end up with one, it's usually just some tiny little thing, but even then, I find myself instinctively shoving it away in my sleep and waking up totally flat.

What I’m really wondering about is how healthy it actually is to just sleep on the mattress without any pillow at all. I’ve heard it’s perfectly fine, but then again, if it’s actually bad for me, what kind of pillow should I be looking for? Something small? Something big?

I mean, let's be real, the head is going to be in an awkward position whether there's a pillow there or not... so, what's the move? What's actually best for the neck?

For like three years straight, I was obsessed with sleeping on these absolutely massive, oversized pillows, and let me tell you—every single morning I’d wake up with my neck feeling like it had been through a car wreck. Now? I finally switched to one of those thinner, firmer ones (maybe around 4 inches thick), and honestly, it’s been a total game-changer!
I haven't quite mastered the art of sleeping without any support, though. If I don't have a pillow under my head, I just end up shoving my hand under my skull instead. 😉

What do you mean by "thinner"? Like, is it some specific medical grade thing or an orthopedic model or what?

It’s one of those merino wool ones from Patagonia. My mom actually picked them up at one of those exhausting, high-pressure sales presentations—you know the type—but honestly? They were worth every single penny! (And before anyone asks, I’m not being paid to 🙂 here!)

Wait, hold on... how are you even sleeping then? On your back? On your side? What does your neck even look like in that position?...

I honestly can't deal with pillows... they just feel suffocating and get in my way 😳

I’ve actually been sleeping without a pillow for—well, goodness, I lost count years ago!

I’ve spent years—honestly, forever—sleeping without any kind of pillow at all... until my back started absolutely killing me every single morning. My neck was just trashed, totally stiff, a complete disaster. Then someone finally suggested I grab an orthopedic, anatomical pillow—preferably a Tempur-Pedic. So, I went ahead and bit the bullet, paid a small fortune for one, and honestly? I haven't regretted it for a single second. The shape basically makes it impossible for me to sleep on my stomach (which, as most of you probably know, is pure death for your lower back)... but my neck feels like it's been reborn. Seriously, if you can swing it, I’d recommend getting one to anyone. A few people I managed to convince are just as obsessed as I am!

And look, I'm not selling these things or anything—I'm just sharing because they are seriously life-changing!

I’m definitely voting for those miniature, firm pillows 👍

Mine is actually huge, but I always end up rolling it up tight at the edge just so I can sleep on that little chunk 🙂

But if 😕

that’s how I get the best, firmest, most comfortable, and pain-free sleep, 😍

then I'll just lie there like a starfish, on my stomach, no pillow. 😁

I used to sleep without a pillow or just use something minimal, but I picked up a Tempur-Pedic about a year ago and it’s been a game changer.
That said, I still end up on my stomach from time to time—it’s easily my favorite way to pass out. The pillow doesn't really get in my way; I just nudge it to the side and 🙂 🙂))...

But honestly, I’ve never heard anyone claim that sleeping on your stomach is actually bad for your lower back...?

I’ve always slept without a pillow.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve pushed pillows away just to get some breathing room.
I tried using one a few times, but it’s useless—it just feels suffocating and keeps me tossing and turning. Meanwhile, my neck and spine feel absolutely wrecked every morning.

I mean, what do you mean "how"? I’m a total stomach sleeper. It’s the easiest way for me to pass out. Why though??!!

Seriously though, Rachel Brooks63, walk us through it... why is stomach sleeping supposedly so bad for the spine? Because I’ve definitely never heard that one before............

Ugh, I would love to explain this to you guys if I actually knew how... Honestly, an orthopedic surgeon explained the whole thing to me once, so I can't say I remember every single little detail—and I definitely wouldn't want some doctor calling me out for getting it wrong. There’s probably some explanation floating around somewhere online, let me look into it

For sure, if you track down an answer, just drop it here.

Did that specialist ever mention if sleeping without a pillow is even healthy in the first place?

Yeah, honestly—your cervical spine definitely needs some kind of "support"...

So, does a regular little pillow actually do anything, or am I stuck buying one of those fancy medical orthopedic ones??
