Escape from LA is a total mess—but then again, taste is subjective. 😉
What exactly didn't work for you? The plot was solid, and the movie had this great self-aware distance from the first one. Kurt did too... I've actually watched it three times!
Maybe Carpenter was just a bit off his game here— body bags—but hey, even the best can slip up. 😉 Even if he isn't at his absolute peak, Carpenter is still plenty entertaining enough to watch. Being a fan doesn't hurt either. 😉

Well, this is a bit of a tangent, but you’ve really struck a chord with me... 😁

*Near Dark* is pretty much the only one of Carpenter's more recent films I've found myself revisiting more than once.

quietdriver3 is absolutely spot on regarding how the masterpieces and the absolute garbage sit side-by-side in LA's filmography.

The real question is simply which of his upcoming projects we'll end up labeling as trash... 🙂

Memoirs of an Invisible Man? 😁
Carpenter is hands down my favorite director. 👍

Prince of Darkness is a true masterpiece; I find myself revisiting it almost every year, a habit I've kept for about a decade now.

I watched Village of the Damned quite a while ago and recall it being just mediocre, though perhaps it deserves a second look.

They Live starts off strong, but becomes truly excellent once the protagonist discovers the truth behind those glasses. It’s likely Carpenter's funniest work, if you count Dark Star.

In a way, yes.

The Dude said:Does that include that weird Village of the Damned remake too? Also, Escape from LA is honestly such a garbage movie.

Includes both.
It even includes Memoirs of an Invisible Man.

Everyone keeps talking about some new Carpenter project, but nobody seems to be mentioning in The Mouth of Madness...
I mean, seriously,
...
(kind of like)
Hey, I was actually looking for a vanilla twist! (the stock kind!)
...
(Unbelievable!)

I honestly cannot recommend this movie to anyone. It’s a total pass, especially since the title makes this completely unearned and unfair comparison to the legendary Carpenter masterpiece

So much was changed or totally reshaped from what it should have been. We're talking everything from the lead character's personality to the core motivation—where the attackers were a complete mystery in the original version. And don't even get me started on the massive amount of plot holes and mistakes...

At the end of the day, I’m left wondering why this movie even exists. Even the action sequences aren't anything special; they just hover at a pretty pathetic average. Some critics are trying to claim the film is actually a commentary on current American politics, which honestly feels like a really bizarre way to judge a movie. 😕

The only scene worth mentioning is the opening, mainly because of those local vibes.

Yeah, I wouldn't go recommending this one to anyone.

But all things considered, I actually enjoyed it... maybe because of how predictable it was, the pointless brutality, and the sheer nonsense woven through the entire thing.

As Tobe Hooper (the man behind legendary Leatherface) once put it: what’s even the point of remaking a great film?

Watched it last night. It was good. I haven't seen the original yet, but I definitely want to check that out soon. The new one is a solid action flick—no real nonsense to speak of. It’s not some absolute masterpiece, but it’s perfectly fine.

You really are such a predictable opportunist—a total sucker for Schumacher and Spielberg—that it’s no wonder you’re drowning in mindless junk... making "no major nonsense" your highest praise is telling. You remind me of someone just looking for the easiest path possible because they can't handle anything actually challenging.
Honestly, you're just forum insanity personified—if you were ten years younger, maybe you'd be fun, but right now you just seem like an old fool... and all that sucking up to the "authorities" here hasn't done a single thing to elevate you above being a mere message board joke.
👎 Just go be a sports fanatic; at least there you won't stand out quite so much for your stupidity.

You’re just a forum lunatic. If you were ten years younger, maybe you’d be interesting, but right now you just look like an aging idiot. And all that sucking up to the "authorities" on this board didn't even help you rise above the level of a basic message board joke.

Pick a side and stick to it, at least then you won't look so incredibly stupid.

Look, Prika, just chill out. Don't try to act tough when you're clearly just being an ass. Look at me—do I spend my time trashing people just because they like a certain movie or genre? No. I don't give a damn about you or any of these "snobs" who think they can talk down to me about stuff as simple as action movies. Suck it.

Can't say I loved it personally, but at least it didn't put me to sleep... which is a win in my book 👍

Man, what an absolute train wreck of a movie👎 Zero points.
Honestly, the only thing that actually motivated me was wanting to go back and watch the original.

I caught the original, and frankly, I can't bring myself to waste my time on this latest mess.

It’s worth noting that Carpenter really hit his stride thanks to that unmistakable musical score he crafts for his projects—it’s iconic. Think *Halloween*, *Assault on Precinct 13*, or *The Fog*.

Just finished watching this one. To put it bluntly? It was pretty weak—really weak—but hey, at least it’s watchable if you just want some mindless fun.

If you haven't seen the original yet, you might actually find this remake a bit more entertaining since you don't have anything to compare it to. But honestly, the original is in a completely different league, so my big piece of advice to anyone who hasn't seen either version is to definitely track down the original first.

My rating: 3/10 (I gave the original a 7/10)

Assault on Precinct 13 is easily one of my top three favorites—Rocky and The Warriors hold the #1 and #3 spots. It’s actually the only Carpenter flick I can sit through because, honestly, I just can't wrap my head around horror movies.

I checked out that 2005 remake, and man, what a letdown. "Copy" doesn't even cover it; it was miles away from the original. I watched it, tossed it aside, and decided it had no business being in my collection. They changed the plot to focus on corrupt cops attacking gangs... all in all, just forgettable.
