I thought maybe the monitor died or the slot was shot, but nope... I popped my graphics card into a buddy's rig and it wouldn't work. Then I put his card in my PC and it worked fine, so the slot is okay... and the monitor isn't dead either...

It's weird because the card showed zero signs of failing. It was working perfectly. I'm telling you, she installed the drivers, used them for two hours, then I get home from work the next day, power up the computer, and nothing but blackness...

Guess I have no choice but to go grab a new card today.

Thank God for the small mercies on my electric bill...

What a mess. But hey... I'm not doing any better. Man, reinstalling every 2-3 weeks! And even now, it's barely working. I'm searching and searching, but I don't even know what I'm looking for anymore! 😢sp1...sp2...old drivers...new ones...
...and my favorite part is when it just freezes without a single error message. Nothing! Just a hard restart and back to square one. 🙄
I've scoured every tech forum on the planet! There's a ton of junk out there (that ati2dvg.dll crap) and everyone has a different "fix"! So much for being an IT pro...🙄

Check to see if your CPU is overheating. It might be a hardware issue. What's your processor temperature hitting? Mine shows 56°C on AIDA, and even just watching movies, my system crashes.

Nah, it's not that. I don't have issues there. I run movies, encode DivX, jump into Photoshop and stuff without any crashes. I'll check AIDA, obviously, but I'm pretty sure it's not the temperature...

I’d suggest using Ghost to make an image of your partition right after a clean install. At least then you can roll the system back in minutes instead of dealing with a massive headache!
Honestly, those issues of yours smell more like hardware incompatibility than driver problems to me.
For what it's worth, SP2 drove me absolutely insane with all the system crashes; I finally kicked it to the curb after three weeks. SP1 runs like a dream.

Honestly, those issues you're having feel more like hardware incompatibility than just driver glitches to me.
To be fair, SP2 drove me absolutely insane. After three weeks of constant crashes, I finally kicked it to the curb. SP1 runs like a dream for me.

I know. I've been thinking about it. Too late now, though... damn, I'd need like 19—count them, nineteen!!—CDs to actually pull that off right now.🙄
But hey, it's an option if I end up doing another reinstall.
Since you brought up Ghost, is it actually reliable? And how does it work? Do I just image the partition while it's fresh, and then when I need it, I just restore it from a disc? Is it complicated? I've never messed with it before, so I'm not sure...

By the way, I'm on SP1 now too. Some problems go away, but new ones pop up. That's just how it goes. 🙄 The eternal struggle. That's basically it.

As for the drivers or the hardware... I'll tell you what, and I'll tell everyone else too—just Google "ati2dvag.dll" (stopped responding) and browse through some forums. Then let me know what you think. Personally, I think it's just a driver or Windows XP issue, but who knows...

It’s reliable and dead simple. The software basically holds your hand through the whole thing—it just asks which partition you want to save, where to put it, and how much compression you want.
I usually just save the image to my D: drive and whip up a boot floppy so I can run Ghost if Windows refuses to start. Easy as that.

Paul Foster262, if my memory serves me right... when we talked about SP2 before... you were actually singing Microsoft's praises for that thing, saying your rig ran it just fine...

So... what changed?

So this is exactly what Hans said about SP2...

It’s just like I said—and of course, I got flak for it because everyone else has been running fine for six months now😁. Turns out they just did a fresh install of SP2 and never actually dealt with the headaches surrounding it

I’m not blaming anyone, really. But if you aren't willing to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows and you just want something that actually works... SP1 is king. So far, nobody has convinced me that SP2 is stable—it's just one issue after another
.
PS—even though the link I posted doesn't explicitly mention those SP2 issues, that's the gist of it...

It’s frustrating for me too—it works perfectly for some folks. My better half hasn't had a single issue with it for months now. None at all. Damn.

Just install Windows 2000 with SP4 and you won't have any issues. Everything will actually run smoother that way.
