Best programs for hard drive health checks (ScanDisk, etc.)?

I'm looking for a solid program to scan my drive—something that can check for bad sectors and those other annoying hardware issues that pop up on a hard drive.
I know Windows used to have a built-in tool that would sometimes run during startup, but I really need an actual application I can launch directly from within Windows or even via DOS.

If any of that is unclear, just let me know. Thanks in advance!

Why don't you just boot into DOS and run scandisk? As far as I know, it'll tell you if there are bad sectors, but man, that’s gonna take forever.
