Huh, I’m sure there’s a setting for this somewhere—probably staring me right in the face—but I just can't seem to track it down... 😳

So, basically, how do I tell Reddit to stop blowing up my inbox every single time someone replies to a thread I'm "subscribed" to?

Thanks. 🙏

You can find more info about that here , but if you ask me, this is the best way to handle it...

Go to options --> edit options --> set "Use 'email notification'?" and "Do you want administrators and Reddit moderators to send you email notifications?" to no

Interesting—but I’ve had all those settings toggled to "off" for ages now. 😕

An alert email looks something like this, for example:

Hey Peter Young43,

User David Harris44 just replied to a thread you're subscribed to titled "How do I turn off email notifications?" over in the Help! subreddit on Reddit.

Here's the link to the thread:

Best regards,

Well, have you even bothered to look at the websites I linked for you?
And listen, when you're drafting a post, make sure you don't leave the "notify me via email" box unchecked.
It’s located right underneath the text field where you type.

Whenever I visit those pages, I subscribe. It’s not that I don't want to cancel the subscription—I just don't need an email pinging my inbox every single time someone replies to a thread.
No, I haven't checked the box at the bottom of the screen to enable email notifications.
Nope, I'm not getting alerts for anything else—just for replies to threads I've specifically subscribed to (usually on subreddits I don't normally hang out in).

Thanks for looking into this! 🙂

Subscribing to a thread means exactly what it says on the tin. You get an email notification whenever someone posts a reply 😁

There’s no point in subscribing to a thread if you aren't receiving those email alerts; that is quite literally the entire purpose of the feature.

Honestly, as long as those threads show up under the subreddits I’ve subscribed to in my "User Settings"—which is my go-to bookmark for browsing Reddit, by the way—I'm fine. Plus, the email notifications just end up in my spam folder anyway. 😛 Whatever, if that's just how the site is set up, I'll just deal with it through my email filters. 😁

Thanks again. 🙏

You're going to have to deal with it.
There is no "I want this" or "I don't want that." It is either everything or nothing at all. 😁

Don't mention it. 😉

So, here’s the situation

I’ve gone into my settings $\rightarrow$ Edit Options $\rightarrow$ and set both "Use email notifications?" and "Do you want administrators and moderators of Reddit to send you email notifications?" to NO

Yet, when I go to reply to a thread, the "NOTIFY BY EMAIL" box remains unchecked under the options menu

The only thing actually checked is "SUBSCRIBE TO THIS THREAD"

Now, subscribing to a thread just means that when I check my inbox, I see an indicator next to my new PMs showing if someone has replied to a topic I'm following

So why on earth am I still getting email notifications?

If subscribing to a thread is one thing, and receiving email alerts is supposedly another, then what is the point of those first two options being disabled for me if they aren't actually doing anything?

That’s just how the software was engineered image
It runs on vBulletin 😁

It's as simple as that. If you subscribe to a specific thread, you get notified when new replies pop up. There is no other way for it to function.

The software architecture seems fine on paper, but I’m struggling to see the logic here. If the system is designed to automatically subscribe you to a topic and trigger an alert whenever an email arrives, then what is the actual purpose of those first two options that I have currently disabled? It feels like they might just be redundant features cluttering the interface. That's the part I can't quite wrap my head around—are they truly necessary if the automation handles everything?

By the way, does anyone know where I can find the latest newsletter? 😁 😁

Sarah Long said:If that’s how the software is actually built—where you just subscribe to a topic automatically or sign up for email alerts—then what on earth is the point of those first two options that I can't even use? It makes me wonder if they’re just completely useless features sitting there for no reason.

The first option, "notify admin," is just a recipe for having your inbox absolutely trashed with ads and spam. The second one actually works—it notifies you when someone replies to a thread you've posted in. You drop a comment somewhere, and you get an email once someone responds to you, regardless of whether you're officially subscribed to that specific thread or not.

Man, you guys are really overthinking this. If you don't want stuff hitting your inbox... every single email provider has a "block" option. Just go in there, type in www.reddit.com and boom—problem solved.
And seriously, go outside and get some fresh air for once.😁

Wanna use 'email notifications'?
If you check this box, you'll get an email ping whenever someone replies to a thread you've jumped into. NO

IMF official said:It’s quite straightforward, really. If you subscribe to a specific thread, you get notified whenever there’s a new response. There isn't any other way for the system to function.

Oh, it can be done. One simply reports their replies as spam and shuts the door on them entirely. We shall see who holds the upper hand then, won't we?😁
