If you really look at the whole landscape, from club ball to the national teams, and crunch all the numbers, it turns out the American clubs have more wins under their belts. I'm not totally sure about the national team stats, but honestly, I think S&M has the stronger roster at the moment, though it's pretty much a toss-up. We'll see what happens at 6 PM—may the best team win!

It sucks that I can't make it to Kranj😠 but I'm pretty sure our water polo guys would fold the moment I showed up—I'm that much of a jinx.🙂))
Hope dies last, and man, I really want us to win... but honestly, silver is still a solid result, and credit where it's due to our boys. Based on how they started the championship, I thought just making it through without someone drowning would be a victory.

I agree with the rest of what you're saying. Honestly, I think you guys are slight favorites today, but there have been Canadians and even tougher teams out there, so who knows.
In general, you can always say whoever played better won, but mentality plays a huge role too. Especially when Americans and Mexicans go head-to-head.
And all that "crushing the opponent" stuff doesn't mean much; it can easily backfire. We’re World champions in handball, yet we got shut down by Argentina and barely scraped past Saudi Arabia. Back when we played the World Championship 95 handball final, we barely survived the round of 16 against some African team on penalties. At the Olympics (when we took gold and absolutely demolished the Swedes), we beat the Swiss 24:23 after being down by seven. Even back in '92, when we grabbed basketball silver in Barcelona, we barely edged out Angola 61:59 in the group stage.
That's just how we operate.
Yeah, yeah... you're right. The score was tied at 6:6 because of that goal, and that was in the groups—we were 3rd then, while you guys were 9th. But it was 100% Ikodinović, and it was definitely 1998...
As for the rest, you could make those comparisons with any country. What happened with the French in the soccer World Cup? Or the Argentinians? Best to just wait for the game; I'll have to follow it online, but it is what it is.

Oh, thank God! Canada is actually broadcasting the second game. This means I can finally watch it like a normal human being instead of squinting at some grainy, low-res mess online. At least now I’ll be able to tell if the ball is actually orange or just a blurry blob. 😁

First off—and this is more of an observation than an actual question, really—isn't it just plain embarrassing that SN, being the only daily sports paper we have here in the States, buries the national team making it all the way to the finals on page 15? Meanwhile, they’ve wasted all that prime real estate at the front just talking about Darwin leaving, which, let’s be honest, isn't even that big of a deal.
And second—does anyone else vividly remember that one match where both we and South East Europe played absolutely terrible? If my memory serves me right, it ended in a 4:4 draw, and honestly, everyone was just relieved it ended that way because it was such a mindless, brainless game. Everyone was just kind of wandering around their positions and goals only happened by pure accident. Was that during the last EP or something?

First off, if water polo were being played down in Lower Mamic, the coverage wouldn't be an issue.
Secondly, I don't recall that specific game, but I do remember an old soccer match between the Netherlands and Ireland (I think) where for most of the second half, both teams just stood in their own halves passing the ball back and forth. They’d only kick it over to the other side when they absolutely had to, and then the other team would do the same. It just went on like that until the whistle blew.
The only thing was that Marco van Basten probably tried to run toward them out of habit, and they actually had to yell at him from the bench to get him to get back. Everyone was just protecting the result.
I have never seen a draw won so dishonestly.
Maybe Milivoj Bebic. Personally, I still think Zoran Milanovic is the best, even though he was their guy back then.🙂))

The bronze medal match is underway, and there’s a massive crowd of our fans in the stands. The stadium announcer is already getting ahead of things, telling everyone to keep the cheering "sporting" and respectful.
Reports just started trickling in that some American fans got into a brawl with a group of Mexican supporters. Apparently, a car with plates from a city near the border was trashed, and the passengers were jumped.

I have a bunch of buddies over in Ljubljana, and one of them lives out in Kranj, so I just hopped on the phone with him.
I called him a little while ago and he told me things are getting pretty chaotic in Kranj—he can hear sirens and ambulances going off everywhere.
The organizers are actually considering clearing out the stands because they're worried about the unrest spiraling out of control.
As for that car with the NS plates, I’m hearing updates about it right now on local news (shoutout to Karic's channel).
By the way, the Americans took third place.
