So, as the thread title suggests, I'm trying to figure out which drive is the better bet here—I'm looking at the 3 TB versions specifically. This is going to be my dedicated gaming drive, not my boot drive, since I've already got a 1 TB Western Digital Green handling the OS. If you guys have actually put one of these through its paces, please let me know how long you've been running it; if you've only had it for two weeks, you can't exactly vouch for its long-term reliability.
(Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001) or (Western Digital Green 3 TB)
Thanks in advance

I had a 750 GB Seagate Barracuda for about four years before finally swapping it out. It started developing bad sectors—which was a sign it was time for an upgrade anyway—so I decided to grab something bigger. I ended up going with a Western Digital Green TB, and honestly, it’s been great because it’s much quieter. That’s mostly because it spins at 5400 RPM, whereas my old one was a louder 7200 RPM drive. That said, I wouldn't personally recommend a Western Digital Green for running an OS or heavy programs; that lower RPM just makes things feel a bit sluggish. If I were setting things up again, I’d probably pick up a Western Digital Blue for the operating system and apps, then keep this one strictly for extra storage and games.

So, just to be clear—is a Western Digital Green actually going to cut it for gaming, even if it’s stuck spinning at 5400RPM?

Yeah, it’s solid—at least in my experience. I mainly use it just for my game library and downloading stuff like movies or games.
My OS and all my actual programs live on an SSD, though.

Lmao, I tried using a Western Digital Green once and man, it was just painfully slow.
If it were me, I’d go with a Red, a Black, or maybe something from Hitachi—though I’ve heard some folks say those can be a bit louder than the Green ones.
