I was just sitting here reminiscing about those legendary rosters from Romania and Bulgaria back in the 90s, when everything really hit its peak during the World Cup 1994.

Look, I know they’ve fallen pretty far from grace since then, and they've missed out on a ton of World Cups and Euros, but I actually felt a little stunned seeing that neither of them has even made it to a World Championship since 1998.

They haven't been showing up at the Euros much either—Romania missed out in 2008 and 2016, and the Bulgarians only made it in 2004 back when they were in the same qualifying group as us. I still clearly remember that loss in Sofia, I think it was back in the fall of 2002, when the Bulgarians took us 2-0.

And yet, here we are, acting all high and mighty and criticizing our own team.🤷

It honestly makes me a little sad seeing how much Japan and Switzerland have become staples at the World Cup lately—it feels like they’re always there, while iconic teams like Portugal, who were regulars through the 1994 World Cup era, just aren't showing up anymore.

It all stems from the same thing, really—declining standards and a general loss of interest in sports following the collapse of the old system, back when athletes actually received decent salaries and real respect. Romania used to be a powerhouse in handball, Bulgaria was huge in volleyball, and don't even get me started on track and field or gymnastics.

Nowadays, it seems like the winning formula for a national team is just sheer economic power, bringing in naturalized players, or having a massive diaspora to draw from. These two countries don't have any of those advantages—they haven't sent anyone to the big stage since 2005, whereas they used to churn out talent like it was nothing.

I mean, you can't really compare Japan to Switzerland. In Japan, it’s incredibly tough to make the cut if you aren't part of the bloodline. For example, France just sucks up all this talent from Africa, even though those guys weren't even born in France.

They’re pretty comparable when you look at football history—I mean, they didn't even make a dent in the World Cup until '98.
Plus, they used to rely on naturalized players, like Wagner Lopes.
As for the French, I don't think that's quite right—most of those players of African descent were actually born in France, which is a different story than the situation with the immigrants in Switzerland.
