So, here’s the deal regarding this thread: How to say no to parasites looking for a free summer vacation.

Judging by the title and the first fifty pages, this whole thing is about those guests who just force themselves on you—uninvited people who decide to crash at your place for the summer. You know the type: they suddenly remember you exist in June because they want a beach trip without opening their wallets, even though they barely even talk to you the rest of the year. It's about the people who just barge into your house or your lake cabin unannounced and expect to be catered to.

For years, this thread was actually one of the funniest spots on the site. You could read some pretty hilarious stories, or maybe vent a little and ask for advice.

But a few days ago, the vibe shifted. Now, anyone who doesn't want to host people is being labeled a sociopath. That got shut down quickly, and the posts were deleted. However, over the last couple of days, the spam has started back up. People are rambling about what kind of "good" person wants to host others versus those who supposedly don't want to welcome anyone, even going so far as to accuse people of being cold toward their own siblings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original topic. The last four or five pages have become an absolute mess of spam, and the thread doesn't even resemble itself anymore. The people posting this stuff now are the exact same ones who were calling everyone stingy before their posts got wiped.

Personally, I’ve asked the moderators to step in a few times, but all I ended up getting was a warning. I can take the warning for going off-topic, and I don't mind my own post being removed, but I don't quite get why everyone else's posts stay up. I received a message telling me to report anything that looks like spam, so I did—I flagged about twenty posts, if not more. Nothing happened. Nothing was deleted, nobody got a warning, and the same annoying argument just keeps cluttering up what used to be an interesting discussion.

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore forum regular, and I don't usually run into trouble; I was banned once, but that was by a moderator who wasn't doing their job and was eventually removed from the position anyway. Still, I felt like I had to say something about this.

I really hope someone does something about this thread, because it would be a shame to see such great stories and interesting anecdotes go to waste. Personally, I don't take the comments I report personally—since I haven't found myself in those specific situations—but it really bothers me to see a good thread turned into a petty shouting match over something totally irrelevant.

I mean, if the topic is about coworkers showing up at your beach house with suitcases while you're too embarrassed to kick them out, then what does that have to do with people arguing about how "humanitarian" it is to invite a neighbor with a sick child to stay? Those two things aren't even in the same universe.

Anyway, I hope that makes sense. If anyone is confused, just read the beginning of the thread to see the context of how it started, and then look at the last four or five pages to see how it's gone off the rails.

Give us a little breathing room after you report something. We aren't glued to our screens 24/7, so we can't always jump on reports the second they land. Thanks for flagging things, though; I'll get to them eventually.
And please, maybe skip the public callouts to the moderators within the threads themselves? That isn't really where that happens. Just use the report function like you're doing now.

But there's just such a massive amount of them, honestly. I wasted half an hour trying to report twenty of them because you have to wait between each report, and there’s easily three times that many left to go.

Not everything you reported actually qualifies as spam. And honestly, sticking strictly to the topic isn't that vital; there’s no need to be quite as rigid about it as you seem to be, obsessing over that one little word in the title. A comment doesn't become spam just because it expands the conversation a bit. It’s up to us to judge how much breathing room to give. This thread is popular and people are actually reading it, so there's really no reason to overmoderate.

At the end of the day, we have moderator warnings to nudge folks back on track if they wander too far off-topic. So, yeah, I cleaned things up a little, but I’m not going to go overboard just because that’s how you think it should be done. I don't see the point.

As for the timing between reports, if you're planning on flagging a massive amount of posts, you could always just send the mods a DM with links to the problematic ones. A DM lets you message up to five people, so just like with the alert system, all the moderators would get notified at once.

EDIT: I finally scrolled to the end of this thread and, wow—you’re the one spamming with these totally useless, whining comments.

The whole thread is a bit of a joke in itself, so when you read certain takes, it’s almost impossible not to throw in a snarky response just to keep things interesting. That’s honestly what makes this discussion so engaging—the way people keep poking fun at each other's posts.

I don't mind a little casual chatter or some light spamming; that's basically how most forums in the States operate. But there are a few people who have taken it way too far, filling entire pages with nonsense that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual subject matter.
To be honest, I might have reported a few posts that weren't strictly off-topic, but it really rubbed me the wrong way when the moderator told me to just report them myself and then handed me a warning instead of actually doing anything about those specific posts.

They cleaned up a few things, but I don't see what this post has to do with the main topic:
Right after that one, a pointless argument broke out that probably should have been deleted entirely.

And this post doesn't fit the theme either; it's just a continuation of that mindless bickering:

I honestly have no clue why you think you get to set the rules for this thread or go on a public crusade against the mods.

To be real with you—and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one feeling this—your constant lecturing about what the topic "should" be and calling everyone else clueless is way more annoying than a little bit of off-topic chatter.
Talking smack about the moderation team within a thread is a big no-no here.

Look, the whole point of this discussion is about those 'freeloaders' looking for a free summer vacation. It doesn't matter if they're trying to crash someone's beach house or a cabin in the woods... it's all the same thing. There's zero reason to split this into two separate threads.
We do scrub posts that drift too far off-track, but we aren't sitting here staring at the screen 24/7 waiting to police every single word...

The point here is about those parasites who are only looking for a free summer vacation. This isn't about someone refusing to host good friends or a sibling... it's about people who only bother to remember you once a year. Some individuals have managed to derail the whole discussion into something else entirely.

I don't consider myself the one to set the boundaries for this topic; those have already been established over the last few years since this thread was started.

It’s not like I’ve been constantly badgering the moderators (I’ve only made about nine posts in this thread over two years—let's say eleven if we count the two that were rightfully removed)—I’ve basically just used two posts to ask the mods to ensure the conversation stays on the track it’s always been on. It isn't really my style to report every single post, so I don't do that. I just expect the moderators to actually read the threads they oversee and notice when things drift off-topic for three or four pages straight.
And look, I realize nobody is expected to be on standby 24/7, but if there's a three-day stretch of pure nonsense being posted, I expect that to be handled. That’s why the role exists in the first place.

@Jacob Sullivan91 You actually took part in the debate that drifted away from the main subject yourself. I have nothing against you or the rest of the moderation team. On the contrary, I think you guys do a solid job considering the types of characters that show up on this forum, but I also believe you have an obligation to accept criticism when it's clearly justified. Honestly, it was only after I opened this thread that things actually started feeling a bit more organized here.
And I don't see how I was publicly calling out the moderators. Is it because I opened a space where we can vent? I haven't mentioned anyone by their username; I simply expressed my frustration at getting a warning while others who were spamming the thread faced zero consequences or deleted posts. I couldn't care less about my own warnings or my deleted posts, but I do care when a discussion loses its way. I've seen too many interesting topics get shut down because they were diverted into something else, and I can see this one starting to slide in that direction too. Whether you let that happen or not is up to you.

It’s all connected, I guess. This thread is really just one big collection of stories about feeling used by people—whether they're friends, relatives, or siblings—who expect a free summer getaway without any regard for your budget, your privacy, or your peace of mind. The location doesn't matter. We aren't trying to sanitize the discussion just to fit your specific vision; some posts might seem off to you, but they actually fit the theme for us. If things drift too far off track, we'll issue a warning or clear out the off-topic stuff. That's why we're here. We aren't here to blindly follow your rules on what belongs in a thread; we're here to review your complaints and act if we actually agree with them. In this particular case, we don't quite agree with everything you're saying.

I honestly think we can wrap this thread up once and for all thanks to that last point from Bliss. Huge thanks to everyone who jumped in to help clarify things—this topic is officially under control and being moderated.
