Hey everyone. So, I’ve got this 250 GB Transcend external hard drive—it's actually just a standard SATA drive inside. The problem is, my PC won't recognize it at all. I'm running a fresh install of Windows 7 and I've made sure all the necessary drivers are updated and ready to go.
I heard somewhere that you might be able to mod it and repurpose it as an internal hard drive instead.
If that's actually doable, could someone please walk me through how to pull that off? I'd really appreciate any help you guys can give me! 🙂

Honestly, just pull it right out of the enclosure and plug it directly into the PC—there isn't any real difference between internal and external drives once you're under the hood.

The thing is, I can't even get it to format! It’s basically a brick right now—I’m not sure if it’s just a bad cable or if the drive itself is shot. It’s a Transcend StoreJet 250 http://www.transcend-info.com/produc....asp?modno=284
Everything seems to be going wrong at once. Does anyone out there have any ideas or maybe some advice on how to fix this? 🙂

It’s either the cable, the case, or the drive itself—honestly, it could be any of them. Try swapping out the cable first. Have you actually tried plugging that drive into a different PC yet?

I’m going to try everything I can and then I'll let you know. I already tested it on another computer and it still won't format. I haven't tried swapping out the cable or the tower itself yet, though. I'll check back in once I've given those a shot.

Forget about formatting for a second—first things first, the PC actually has to recognize the drive before you can even think about formatting it.

Plug it into your PC and head over to Device Manager—check under Disk Drives to see if it’s even showing up. It might just need a drive letter assigned. If not, go to Disk Management and see if it shows up there.
The only other way is checking the BIOS to see if the system recognizes it... if it's nowhere to be found, you've got a hardware failure—either a bad cable or a dead drive.

It recognizes the drive, but says it’s a RAW file system
The second I plug it in, it asks if I want to format it. I tried selecting NTFS to get it formatted, but Windows just won't finish the job.

Just wipe that RAW partition entirely, spin up a brand new one, and then go ahead and format it.
