Asking for a password during startup?

A buddy of mine has this old 10-inch Netbook with 1 GB of RAM, and he just bumped it up by adding another 1 GB. Now, as soon as he hits the power button, he’s just staring at a black screen.
First, it displays F-15 first boot device along with F10-BIOS settings, but then it immediately asks for an "ENTER CURRENT PASSWORD" and just locks him out completely. He can't get past it.

So, I figured we’d just wipe it and install a fresh OS. I rebooted the machine and tried hitting F9, but instead of getting into the boot menu, it just loops back to that same "ENTER CURRENT PASSWORD" prompt.
Same thing happens when I try pressing F10.
Anyone have a clue what's going on here or how we can bypass this?

Try resetting the BIOS. It used to be done via jumpers on older machines, but I'm not sure how they handle it nowadays.
Check the motherboard specs.

So, if I’m reading this right, the pass is looking for that extra 1GB after it was added?
Would it even function without that 1GB?

Is it possible there's some kind of built-in configuration checksum?
Or maybe that 1GB just didn't trigger properly?

So, a buddy of mine just gave me a slightly different version of how this went down. He was running his old laptop with just 1 GB of RAM, but he decided to swap it out for a 2 GB stick he picked up on eBay. As soon as he finished the upgrade and hit the power button, the screen immediately flashed that "ENTER CURRENT PASSWORD" prompt at him.

I mean, if you actually remember who it was, they probably sent over a link detailing exactly which passcode you need to enter. It’s highly likely they all share the same factory default setting anyway, so I guess I'm not entirely sure why you're still dwelling on this?

Usually, if someone is hunting for a BIOS password, it’s because they’re holding onto a stolen laptop 😁

I guess it used to be the one question on this entire subforum that everyone just avoided answering.

Look, I already cycled through every single one of those passwords and nothing works. Nothing.
I honestly have no clue what happened. Why on earth is it asking for a password when nobody has even touched the settings?

Try pulling the CMOS battery off the motherboard for about thirty seconds, then pop it back in. That is, if you can actually reach it without breaking something first.

Maybe the laptop is just forcing you into BIOS because it thinks something was messed with (so you could try a factory reset), but I guess the BIOS itself is locked down.
