Locked out of Windows: Can't remove account due to forgotten password

Retailers charge more for a computer with a pre-installed OS, (though slightly cheaper), for different reasons.
Especially when buying an OS from a (retailer), the customer is fully protected—licensing, user limits, warranties, and so on.

Ultimately, why would anyone who just needs a laptop pay extra for an OS they might already own...
or rather, why would anyone pay you for having Windows OS installed if they're buying the laptop specifically to install Linux instead?

I have a Gmail account I log into every single day without issue. Usually, I just sign out when I step away from my desk and clear my history.

Today, I tried logging in, and suddenly they’re demanding identity verification to prove it's actually me.👎

Naturally, the only option is to send a code to a phone number I haven't used in months. I changed my number a while back, so there's no way to get a code sent to the old one, but Google is being completely stubborn about requiring that old number for recovery.

Does this mean my Gmail is basically gone? Am I stuck making a new one? I've got a massive amount of stuff tied up in that account.🤔
