I was actually looking for a way to just wipe my profile from this forum entirely, and somehow I ended up here. What’s the deal—why isn't deleting an account allowed?

It would be an illegible mess.
That is precisely why it isn't done, nor should it ever be.

Actually, you're mistaken. If we did that, the content itself wouldn't actually be erased, and every single username involved would simply morph into something like "Anonymous."

While a quote preserves the actual message—meaning any thread built on that substance would still exist—the problem is that once a profile is deleted, victims wouldn't be able to search for malicious individuals, stalkers, or other creeps. (And let me be clear: they exist. Yes, psychopaths are out there, and there is no foolproof way to filter them out during the account creation process.)

More polished social media platforms offer a genuine option to delete one's profile, a level of decency that this forum, unfortunately, hasn't even begun to approach.

They should really let us toggle an "invisible" mode in our profile settings. That way, the admins see everything like usual, but everyone else just sees a "?". Of course, you wouldn't be able to actually post under that name anymore—just log in and read. Once the government passes the new privacy law, those folks defending the old-school ways will probably start begging for extensions.🤦

If they actually made that happen, I’d be the first to sign up. Honestly, I think Emily Myers8 would jump at the chance too.

We recently had some threads in "appeals against a card" just wiped out without any explanation.

I only filed an appeal once my ban expired, keeping things civil and acting like a gentleman.

I was penalized—which, in my opinion, was totally unearned by—well, I might be wrong, but the mod in question didn't deny it—this plumber who somehow (how?) ended up as a moderator under the handle MAJSTOR. He takes stuff like "How to replace a cartridge on a single-lever faucet" and puts it in the TOP THREAD, while my thread about getting free water, electricity, food, and tourism income for next to nothing gets shoved aside. It’s being handled by the AFL-CIO style of management, where the higher-ups just delete posts, swap images for links (using Postimage links labeled "FOR THE FORUM"), and then dump everything into some stupid "EXPERIMENTAL THREAD" before eventually stripping my posts and photos and penalizing me for "writing too much." I've had enough.

"Writing too much" on this forum? Are you kidding me?

Is it not in the forum's best interest for people to actually contribute?

God damn it. Usually, when I post, I try to keep it light with a bit of humor—easy reads that you either enjoy or skip past. That's just how I am; I'm not a heavy hitter, but I say what I mean and I don't hold back on good ideas.

There’s no disrespect intended, just useful ideas.

Half of the old-school crowd is going to head over to Reddit because this place has turned into a censored mess. It’s all "don't argue with me, I'm the moderator, so it is what it is"

mod nonsense.

Whatever. Time will tell.

In the meantime, the house is livable. We've got water and power.

The "cabin" provides utilities, we have 21 trees growing, and we've got tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, peppers, lettuce, Swiss chard, zucchini, watermelon, garlic, red onion, corn, and a few liters of olive oil ready for next year—plus some decent cash from tourists.

The problem is, nobody’s going to figure out how to pull this off for such a low cost.

Give thanks to "MAJSTOR" and the management above him who refuses to keep an eye on what's actually happening on the ground here.

If anyone's bothered by it, that's their problem, not mine.

It’s never going to happen...

From what I’ve observed so far, forums using such outdated software typically don't allow for profile deletion. They generally lack an understanding of the "modern era"—specifically the user's need for better anonymity, security, privacy, and more granular control over their own profiles.

Platforms that actually get this right have moved on to much newer formats. They look significantly more modern and offer a wide range of features, which often includes the ability to delete a profile upon request (though even then, posts might remain, depending on the specific rules).

This forum looks exactly the same as it did twenty years ago, and it's unrealistic to expect that will ever change. It will simply keep running as long as it can, provided various server errors—like 502, 503, or 504—don't eventually bring it down.

The only thing a user can really do is enter an incorrect email address and password to lock themselves out of their account. That is pretty much it. 🙂

What's the deal with profiles like this? You can't click them, you can't open them, and there isn't even a post count listed.

What am I looking at?

What is going on here?

Those are profiles that were essentially "swallowed" by 😁 a server crash somewhere back when my current profile was first created. In fact, my very first account suffered the same fate, which is why I had to start fresh.

I have personally suggested many times that this feature should be enabled for any user who wants it, but the answer is always a firm no. My posts under my old username, such as this one, are still perfectly visible for anyone to read and reply to, so I don't see an issue. 🤷

Unless it's meant to prevent clone accounts, though that method isn't even reliable. 🤷 Especially since there are so many clones on the forum today, including those belonging to permanently banned users... Or perhaps it's simply just the forum's policy. 🤷

Regardless, it doesn't change much, so all you can do is live in the slight hope that some future technical error might "swallow" your profile too. 😁
