The Big Mistake (1996)

Released in 1996, this dark comedy-thriller is a standout piece of American cinema directed by Gerard Depardieu. The story follows Bernardюсь, a somewhat bumbling accountant working for a massive corporation, who finds himself heading home exhausted after a corporate retreat held deep in the Rocky Mountains. Somewhere along those winding mountain roads, he suffers a devastating car accident, leaving him stranded without any cell service to call for help. In his desperate search for assistance, he stumbles upon a secluded mountain cabin and decides to step inside—which turns out to be the "big mistake" the title refers to. It turns out the cabin belongs to a cult whose members are in the middle of a mass suicide pact, though the leaders have much more sinister plans involving a massive stash of cash. After a series of chaotic twists, Bernardюсь and Sebastian, a cult member who couldn't quite bring himself to go through with the act, manage to escape the cabin with all the leaders' money. Naturally, this enrages the high-ranking cultists, who launch a frantic pursuit to reclaim their fortune. As they flee, Bernardюсь and Sebastian find themselves caught in a string of dangerous, absurd, and genuinely hilarious situations.
During the 90s, thanks to the massive popularity of certain blockbuster franchises, foreign films were a staple in American theaters, and this movie rode that wave of interest right into our local cinemas. I remember catching this one at a small theater while visiting my grandparents during summer break. There were maybe ten of us in the audience, but we were laughing uncontrollably from the opening credits to the very end. While it might not be a household name today, it is certainly a solid film. It wouldn't be a mistake to give this "Big Mistake" a watch.
