Hey everyone!
So, a few days ago, my phone actually landed right on the ROG GL 553VE key.
I checked some videos on YouTube, but I couldn't find anything specifically for my exact model.
The key just keeps popping off, which makes typing incredibly frustrating.
It shouldn't be rocket science, right? But I probably need to know how this works.
Any chance someone can help me out?

I don't think there's any deep mystery to it, but I probably need to know how it works.

What does the underside of the key (the cap itself) look like? Does it have those two tiny little L-shaped metal clips that snap onto the actual switch on the keyboard?

So, there are four metal teeth at the base. Two on top that are wider, and two narrower ones underneath.
The plastic "platform" (the rail) is supposed to sit right on them. But looking at all the videos on YouTube, I don't see these four teeth at all—just a metal piece underneath where the platform clips in. It looks like one solid metal frame, so why would anyone even bother making a video about it?
My setup here is a bit more complicated, though.

Hmm... maybe grab a quick photo of the key from underneath, plus a shot of the little "hinge" mechanism on the keyboard itself?

Check it out, here’s where you can find some replacement keys:
https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.co...SAAEgKBevD_BwE

They actually list specific ASUS models right there, including the GL553VE.

And if you need a visual guide on how to swap it out, check this video:

I’m totally lost on how to upload pictures to this forum. It feels like we’re using some ancient tech for posting photos here.
The key on the inside is just completely smooth and white. I can't see how it stays in place unless it was glued onto that silicone cap. Actually, scratch that—I'm lying. The key has four little tabs, but they're facing the opposite way from the base. Basically, the spacing of the tabs is the reverse of the bottom part (it's tighter at the top than at the bottom). There's definitely a logic to it, but you really have to stay calm and know exactly what you're doing.

If those video instructions aren't doing the trick, just snap a photo of the key and the base and toss it up on
https://www.prtsc.ca/

Based on what you said, it sounds like it should just "click" when those top tabs on the key snap into the base. But, heads up—most of these keys actually have little metal clips or hinges that need to slide right into the side grooves of the housing first.

I just snapped a little metal tab on the hinge. Now I'm stuck, ugh!
Whatever, I'll just drag it to a repair shop and hope they can patch it up enough to work, even if it's just a temporary fix. I really need this laptop, but using it with a broken key like this? It's giving me the creeps 🙂

Honestly, I’m just gonna drag it to a repair shop and pray they can patch it up enough to work—even if it’s just a half-fix. I really need this laptop, but trying to type with a busted key? Absolute nightmare. 🙂

Haha... well, now you're looking at having to tear down the whole keyboard assembly, and even then, who knows if you can actually pop that single switch off the metal frame...

If it was designed right, it'd be a quick 10-minute job to swap out the switch and the keycap. But honestly? God knows with these things. Some shops will try to tell you that you have to replace the entire keyboard deck just to fix one click. Watch your wallet, man—don't let them rip you off.

Thanks so much for the help, regardless of how it turns out!
No way. I’m not sending this to an authorized repair center. I’ll just take it to a local shop to get the key fixed since it's literally falling off right now. Maybe they can actually make it work like it's supposed to.
I honestly don't think an official service center would even bother with something like this.

Nah, no way. I'm not sending this to an authorized service center. I'm just gonna find some local repair guy to fix the key since it's literally falling off right now. Maybe he'll actually get it working like God intended.
Honestly, I don't think an official shop would even touch this.

A local tech will usually handle these little glitches way better; for the big authorized shops, it’s just too much hassle for such a minor thing.

If anyone could lend a hand, I'd really appreciate it.

It looks like they just copied a terrible design choice from Apple (who also forced users to swap out entire keyboards). Honestly, whoever came up with that at Apple deserves a stern talking-to.
Basically, half the time you'll end up having to replace the whole keyboard assembly. Occasionally you can just snap it back into place, but more often than not, you can't.

Well, here we go again. My laptop is acting up once more.
The screen is giving me massive headaches. I sent it in back in early November because the display was flickering and distorting (though it looked fine in Safe Mode).
That’s when I first asked them to fix the key, too. They supposedly sent it back "repaired," but just four days later, it went totally dead. I tried restarting a million times. It hits the ASUS splash screen, starts an automatic repair loop, and then the fan just goes absolutely wild.
So, I packed it up and sent it back to service. Today they called to say the "issue is resolved."
I mentioned the keyboard problem, but I guess I can't say anything else until it actually arrives.
They haven't even reached out, despite me telling them to send over a quote if the whole keyboard needs replacing.
I don't know, I always get a bad feeling about laptops heading to the repair shop. You're always left wondering—what if this happens again? And honestly, it really has happened before.
Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'm just hoping they finally fixed that key or at least made it usable again.
It’s such a shame. This is a high-end machine, and it lasted a solid two and a half years without a single hiccup.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I’m really hoping it was just a simple key sticking or something they could easily reset so it works smoothly again.
It’s a real shame, too; for such an expensive machine, it lasted about two and a half years without a single issue.

It happens to the best of us. Honestly, an issue with the screen shouldn't be a massive deal. I’ve actually had pretty good experiences with repair shops myself. Once, they even upgraded my screen from 1600x900 to Full HD. In the worst-case scenario, they might have to swap out the motherboard, but everything is fixable, especially if the laptop is still relatively new. Keyboards are a bit trickier, though, since they have to source the right layout or laser-etch the specific US symbols onto the existing one.

Right now, I’m actually using a Lenovo Flex 5 for work, which isn't usually my favorite brand. People say they aren't the most reliable, so I'll let you know if that turns out to be true. So far, though, I've noticed that most failures come down to accidental damage rather than design flaws—though you do see occasional manufacturing issues, like certain old HP series with ATI graphics or those Acer keyboards.

Man, they didn't even fix the key. It looks like they just slapped some adhesive on there—I can still see the sticky residue—but two of the tiny clips snapped off, and one broke at the base too. Now I've just got it jammed in place. The glue is only holding one side... it's such a pain to type on because I have to press down so hard, otherwise I end up missing letters mid-sentence.
As for the screen, they had to swap out the entire motherboard, and then it went back in for a second round to have the BIOS reprogrammed. Honestly? It’s been running like a dream for about 15 days now. Can't complain!
