Upgrading from an HDD to an SSD

Hey everyone! Quick question—are the SSDs used in laptops the exact same as the ones used in desktop PCs?

Yeah, they're identical.

In both scenarios, you've got access to 2.5" SATA, M.2 SATA, and M.2 NVMe drives.

Thanks! I just swapped my desktop over to an SSD as the boot drive, and man, it really proves everything people say about that massive speed jump. It's night and day. I was browsing some shops for a new laptop, and they were only showing standard hard drives, so I just assumed—but I wasn't 100% sure.

If your laptop is still running on an old hard drive, just grab a 2.5" SSD. They all use the same form factor, so it’ll slide right into the slot where your old External Hard Drive used to sit.

Don't overthink it—just pick up something budget-friendly. It’s not like you need a top-of-the-line powerhouse for an older machine like this.

Before you dive in, make sure the drive in that Dell Inspiron 15 is set to SATA mode. If it isn't running on SATA, the SSD will still work, but you're basically leaving speed on the table—it'll be like driving a Ferrari in a school zone.

I just read online that you can see this setting in the BIOS. Is there any way to tell just by looking up the model number? It's currently running Windows 10.

I mean, the SATA controller is almost certainly already enabled—it’s not like this laptop is some ten-year-old relic...
