François Cevert: The most talented driver who was destined for greatness, but fate had other plans

Jackie Stewart once claimed this kid was destined to be the greatest of them all. He had the whole package—incredible looks, pure class, came from a great family, a piano virtuoso, an elite tennis player, brave, fast, a total bohemian, just a genuinely good guy who everyone loved. He was supposed to be the one stepping into Jackie Stewart's shoes when he retired. Even now, he’s still one of the most beloved drivers to ever do it, but everything changed back in '73 at Watkins Glenn in the USA when luck just ran out. It's a damn shame, but that's life. Back then, death was practically grabbing coffee with the drivers. It caught even the best of them.

Back in the day, NASCAR was the real deal. You had these raw, powerful machines and the absolute Dream Team running the show on the track. Just look at what Cevert did to guys like Emerson Fittipaldi. Even though he only snagged one win, he racked up 13 podiums—most of which would be his if he hadn't been forced to play second fiddle to Jackie Stewart. Jackie basically signaled the end of his era because he realized he couldn't stay alive out there with this kid breathing down his neck. This "little guy" was absolutely tearing up the competition, but he was held back by team tactics. If Cevert had been given a free hand, nobody would have stood a chance against him. While Jackie looked like he belonged in a movie with Karl Malden, Cevert was pure class. Jackie saw the writing on the wall—that the kid was simply faster—and that’s why he called it quits. It’s such a shame Cevert went too soon; he was a once-in-a-lifetime talent. We're talking about someone in the same league as Jacques Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, Didier Pironi, Michael Schumacher, and Nigel Mansell—honestly, probably even better than Alain Prost or Niki Lauda.🙏

Cevert is on the rise, but Tyrrell’s golden era is definitely winding down.

I honestly don't get why anyone would confidently give him better odds than Emerson Fittipaldi, Peterson, Niki Lauda, Rege, or even Schekter...🤷
