Hey everyone... So, here's the deal. I just scored an NVIDIA GTX 1060 8gb as a gift—sweet, right? Anyway, I finally landed a job and just got my first paycheck, but let's be real, my budget is pretty tight. I've found two different PCs that don't have a GPU, and I'm trying to decide which one to grab. With the first option, I wouldn't change a single thing, but with the second one, I’d probably pick up a used Intel Core i3-7100 to pair with it—that fits, doesn't it? I know there's gonna be some serious bottlenecking involved. So, which setup is going to give me better performance and less headache? I could eventually swap in a Ryzen 5 1600x on the second build in a few months since that's already in my sights. But with the first one, I'd have to overhaul the motherboard, the RAM, and obviously the CPU. Honestly, the second PC seems like the cheaper way to go.
First PC:
CPU = Intel Core i7
Motherboard = MSI Gaming Motherboard Aura
RAM = 8GB 2x4
HDD 1TB
PSU = 500W

Second PC:
CPU = Intel Pentium (though I'd actually use an Intel Core i3-7100)
Motherboard = ASUS A320
RAM = 8GB 2x4 DDR4 2666MHz
SSD, HDD...
PSU = Corsair 400W PSU

Which of these two is actually worth my money? And which one is going to have the smaller bottleneck? Oh, and one more thing—is that power supply in the second build actually okay for my card? Thanks in advance for the help!

The Intel Core i3-6100 is pretty much on par with an old i5-2500. 😉 They feel very similar in actual performance. Because they're so close, I honestly think pairing it with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 would be a great sweet spot for a build like this.

Then again, that Intel Core i5 could probably handle an RX 480 down the road if you need to upgrade.

What kind of total budget are we looking at here?

Honestly, pairing an Intel Core i3 with an RX 480 isn't a bad combo at all. 😉

It’s just easier to hang onto your current GPU and buy the rest of the parts separately, rather than wasting money on those pre-built junkers.

Sorry for bumping this thread so often.

I'd really appreciate it if someone with more experience could weigh in here.

In my opinion, an NVIDIA RTX 3060 paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 isn't a bad setup; it's actually pretty decent for what it is.

My main concern, though, is whether my power supply can actually handle the load. Between a 150W GPU and a 65W CPU... I'm a little worried.

Let's just wait for a seasoned pro to chime in.😉
