Well, I suppose everything is pretty much laid out right there in the title, but I’m running into a bit of a wall here. Every time I try to load them in to burn something, nothing shows up on my screen and the burning process just won't even start. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, or if there's actually a way to fix it?

You didn't actually say much there... What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Honestly, it sounds kind of funny—I can't even remember the last time I burned anything myself! 🤣

And I'm a bit lost on what you meant by "nothing is showing up"—what exactly is supposed to be appearing? Could you walk me through the problem with a few more details? It's hard to help if I don't know what's going wrong.

Whenever I pop a DVD into the drive and try to "open" it up or mess around with the settings, the system just refuses to show me the storage capacity or that little progress bar that tracks how much space I've actually used. It’s just like
nothing is even there at all... which is incredibly frustrating because when I swap it out for a different disc, everything works perfectly fine as expected.

What brand of DVD are we talking about here? Is it +R, -R, or RW? Also, what's the make and model of the burner, and which software are you using to burn them?

I'm using Verbatim DVD-Rs, and my laptop is an HP... I usually stick with ConvertXtoDVD 3 to handle the burning process, but honestly, the software itself shouldn't be the issue here...
It’s just that whenever I grab a different batch of DVD-Rs from that same manufacturer and run them through the exact same program, they burn perfectly every single time. It leaves me wondering, though—if I have a spindle of 25 discs, why does it feel like maybe five of them just refuse to work? I can't quite wrap my head around what might be causing such a hit-or-miss result with the media.

Honestly, I’m not even surprised anymore seeing so many DOA media discs in a single pack. Optical media is pretty much a dying technology at this point—kind of like how it used to be with floppy disks where you'd pull one or two out of the box and they were already dead.
It's just old tech, thin profit margins leading to crappy quality control, maybe some tired lasers in the players, or who knows how long they've been sitting in a warehouse... any little hiccup leads to a failed burn.

It feels a bit weird though, since Verbatim is such a solid brand (their Crystal Day stuff works flawlessly these days), so having a 20% failure rate is high. But I think all those factors I mentioned are to blame.

Like I said before, I haven't burned anything in years, but I recently tried helping a neighbor out. I dug up some old Verbatim (let me think... what was it called again?), and it worked perfectly on the first try.

Nowadays, USB sticks die on you daily; honestly, it's not even worth stressing over why.

BTW, I luckily forgot all about using ConvertXtoDVD 3 ages ago. The bigger headache now is actually finding a way to connect a device that plays everything to a modern screen...

Between the tech being on its way out, the thin profit margins leading to looser quality control, maybe some aging lasers in the players, or who knows what kind of questionable storage conditions they went through... any little hiccup just turns into a total error.

It feels a little strange, though, because Verbatim is such a respected name—I mean, their Crystal Day stuff works flawlessly these days—so seeing a 20% failure rate feels high, but I suspect all those factors are exactly why it's happening.

Like I mentioned earlier, I haven't actually burned anything in years, but I recently tried helping my neighbor out with something; I dug up some old Verbatim discs (let me think, what was the specific model again...?), and they worked perfectly on the first try.

Nowadays, USB sticks fail almost daily; it's really not worth the headache trying to overanalyze the reasons why.

By the way, I'm a ConvertXtoDVD 3 user myself, but thankfully I moved past that ages ago; the bigger struggle now is just finding a device that can play everything and actually connect to a modern screen without a fuss...

🙂 So it's not me, it's not my computer, or anything else... it's just the CD? 🙂 Well, alright then...
