Data recovery from a hard drive

Alright, I need some advice on this mess. My hard drive is a complete disaster right now. Based on what you guys have dealt with, what’s actually worked? Any specific software you’d recommend?

Real professional software is either prohibitively expensive or strictly reserved for specialized corporations. You could try using Recuva, but don't go expecting it to handle anything particularly complex. Your best bet for recovery will likely be simple image files and text documents.

If the hardware itself is fried, no amount of software is going to save you. But if it's just a logical error, then yeah, software can be a lifesaver.
I once managed to pull a decent amount of data off a drive that had been totally trashed by a TV using some weird proprietary file system. I used Get Data Back for that.

There are actual data recovery firms out there that specialize in pulling files from broken media, whether the issue is software-based or hardware-based. Just a heads up: they don't do it cheap. It really comes down to how much those files are worth to you.

My PC got stuck in the Windows error recovery loop, and I just can't seem to get past it. My plan is to pull the hard drive out, pop it into an external enclosure to back up my files on another machine, and then just wipe everything and do a fresh Windows install.
Where’s the best place to pick up a cheap SATA-to-USB adapter? I don't mind if it's used. I haven't had much luck finding anything decent on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

Edit: I'm actually not sure which specific HDD is inside this Dell Inspiron.

...so why do you even need a drive bay?
I’m pretty sure we're talking about a SATA drive here. You can just hook it up to another PC using an extra power cable you've got lying around (just make sure you unplug the data cable from your current rig first).
Honestly, you don't even need to mount it inside the case for a quick fix. You can just let it sit out on the desk for the few minutes it takes to grab your files... just don't go banging it around or dropping it.

I picked up a SATA to USB adapter, so I'll just run it through that.

I mean... at what point does it actually become easier to just copy everything over at a slower speed rather than pulling a whole DIY project, opening up the PC, and trying to cram two extra cables onto the drive?
