Short circuit

So, I totally just fried something—or at least it feels like it. I was messing around with my headset plugged into my PC, and somehow the mic jack ended up slipping right into a power outlet. Total disaster. Now, my computer isn't putting out any sound at all. Is this something I can actually fix, or am I looking at buying a whole new motherboard or some other expensive part?

If you're dealing with dead audio on your motherboard, you can always just grab a PCI sound card and disable the onboard one in the BIOS.
I don't know, something feels off about that... I mean, if a power cable actually slipped into a socket, the whole thing should have gone up in smoke instantly, probably frying the motherboard too.
Before you go buying hardware, try going into Device Manager, deleting the onboard sound device, and then letting macOS (rescan hardware) take care of reinstalling the drivers.
