G-Sync on a 144Hz monitor?

Hey, I’m looking to treat myself to something top-tier, and every tech site keeps pointing me toward the ROG Swift PG279Q, which is sitting around $1,000 right now.

Does anyone know of something similar that won't break the bank quite as much? Only if the quality actually holds up, though.

The issue is, nobody seems to have this one on display at the local Best Buy, so I can't really check it out in person before pulling the trigger.

Finding a high-refresh monitor like that to actually test will be difficult enough.
You should probably test one first. Not everyone has lightning-fast reflexes.
It is entirely possible your reaction time isn't there, making the upgrade pointless.
Plus, you’ll likely have to drop your resolution just to get the GPU to push those frames.
There are plenty of high-speed monitors available at half the price. You might have better luck finding one of those to trial before buying.
Why not try someone's setup at home instead of heading to Best Buy?
Just ask around if anyone has a fast monitor you can test; bring a six-pack of beer if they're of age.🙂

I'm rocking a GTX 1080 right now, but I'll be upgrading to a 1080 by the end of the year, so speed isn't really my main concern.

My big priority is just making sure this is actually worth the money compared to the basic Samsung TV I've been using as my main monitor.

Look, on paper, this monitor is top-tier. The real issue is the price tag being driven up by G-Sync technology. If you want a smarter move, FreeSync is the way to go—it’s a much more budget-friendly alternative. That said, high-end Intel graphics cards just aren't hitting the mark this year, plus there's the big question of whether you can even find them at a decent price given how much the crypto miners have messed with the market.
