It would be too easy if I only had one thing going wrong. Basically, the system doesn't even recognize it in Device Manager. When I try to install the drivers, I just get an error saying they "aren't compatible with this version of Windows."

So, naturally, I tried running the Anniversary update through Windows update, but that's a total disaster too. It starts, then hangs. Then it just resets itself back to the beginning.

So, naturally, I tried running the Anniversary update through the Windows update interface—but that’s giving me grief too. It starts downloading, then just hangs. Then, out of nowhere, it resets itself back to the beginning.

Your Windows setup is a total mess. Honestly, you might be better off just grabbing Windows 10 since that update is already baked into the installer... which basically means you'll need to wipe the hard drive if you don't have anything important saved on there.

Just grab the ISO—it already includes the latest update—wipe the hard drive, and go ahead with the Windows installation
