- maybe try plugging it into a different computer, just to see if the issue is actually with the phone or if it's the PC itself
- check the cable—it might be a second. Sometimes those internal wires fray; it might still charge just fine, but it won't have enough juice to actually establish a data connection with the computer
- it could be a driver mess-up on the computer side. With some phones, you really need to manually install specific drivers to get the data transfer working. You should probably head over to the manufacturer's website and grab their USB driver... though I'm not sure which model you're rocking.
This kind of thing happens when Microsoft pushes out a new Windows update—sometimes they just break a driver or an app, and you end up having to reinstall everything from scratch.
- this one’s a bit harder to hear, but I once had one of those cheap, knock-off chargers and—not immediately, mind you—it fried the data chip. Everything else worked, but the connection was dead. I started suspecting the charger because my previous phone had a different issue that popped up right after using a cheap cord... basically within a month. I ended up sending my new phone in for repair under warranty and just bought a high-quality, name-brand charger instead.
