Hi there.
I’m sorry if there’s already a thread about this (I posted this in the food section too, so hopefully it isn't too much of a nuisance), but I really need some advice regarding my brother's health, diet, and overall mental state. It’s become an obsession with "clean eating" and wellness that is getting increasingly alarming as time goes on. He’s 25, physically active—he works as an HVAC technician—stands about 6'1", but he weighs barely 125 lbs, if not less. Here’s the situation.

It all started just over two years ago when he became fixated on healthy eating. At first, he cut out absolutely everything gluten-related, along with general carbs and sugars, claiming they made him feel sluggish, even though he doesn't actually have any allergies. Then, after watching a few YouTube documentaries about hormone-laden livestock and antibiotics, he decided dairy was toxic and cut out milk, yogurt, cream, cheese—all of it. From there, canned goods, deli meats, anything with added sugar, and most meat products were gone too.

As far as food goes, he basically survives on fruits and vegetables from local farmers' markets combined with some specific rice he buys at Microsoft. Every ten days or so, he’ll eat a bit of lamb or beef, provided he can verify it comes from a specific neighbor's farm, and maybe fish once a month. He also eats nuts and homemade lard because of the fats. He only eats one meal a day and claims he isn't even hungry. Honestly, he looks incredibly malnourished, which is what worries me. He makes up for the lack of calories by using heavy amounts of coconut oil—which he insists is the healthiest substance on Earth—with his rice every single day. He’s consuming about 50 grams of it daily just to keep his weight from plummeting further. And don't even get me started on the circus he puts on when shopping at local farms; he’ll sniff produce to see if it's been sprayed, interrogate people about their planting methods and seeds, and even scrutinize a vendor's fingernails to check for chemical residue. He picks fights with vendors, doctors, pretty much anyone who disagrees with him... and it’s starting to grate on the rest of us because we can see this phase just expanding into every part of his life. He eats separately, uses his own dedicated pots, and strictly uses wooden utensils because he believes iron is poisonous. He spends forever washing produce, sometimes even using baking soda to scrub it.

He’s constantly taking various supplements he orders online. His daily routine includes iodine drops to ward off radiation, gelatin mixed with water for bone strength, zeolite to "detox" from radiation and chemtrails, some kind of clay, clove oil, walnut oil, almond oil, castor oil, hemp oil... you name it. Plus tons of herbal teas, magnesium, iron... essentially, whatever nutrient he isn't getting from his restricted diet, he tries to fix with some "miracle" supplement. Oh, and he loads his rice with massive amounts of turmeric, pepper, Himalayan salt, and heaven knows what else to prevent cancer. He actually buys these things in bulk—zeolite, iodine, oils, teas—and resells them to friends and family. Most people believe him because he carries himself with such intense authority and "knowledge." It’s getting a bit scary because he’s even convinced some friends to switch to drinking distilled water. It’s not a huge amount, but you can tell how much misplaced confidence he has when he’s 100% certain that water is the only way to live. He treats it like a little side hustle or hobby. He even suggested to a girl that cayenne pepper could replace lentils to improve her vision, and he actually yelled at our grandmother when she broke her arm, telling her it was because she drinks milk rather than acknowledging she's a 75-year-old woman.

Now, this behavior has bled into everything. He won't let us wash laundry with detergent; he only uses baking soda and apple cider vinegar. He won't have internet on his phone because of "radiation," and he only wears elastic waistbands or sizes too big so nothing constricts him—he's terrified of having a stroke or heart attack. He won't wear watches or rings for the same reason and constantly nags us about wearing them. He wears special underwear for "fertility" and washes his hair and skin with only "natural" ingredients. There's no TV in his room, and his computer is kept far away from his bed. He never uses headphones because he's worried about hearing damage, he hates touching cash (sometimes insisting others put money in his wallet for him), and he won't let anyone sit on his bed, only on a separate couch. It just keeps digging deeper. Lately, I heard he stopped drinking coffee because it's too acidic. He's planning to quit smoking tobacco and marijuana soon (which is the one good thing), and he'll probably ditch the rice in six months for some plant-based alternative because he thinks rice is "contaminated." He might even stop eating the lamb and fish entirely. The other day, he actually ran out of rice—a rare occurrence—so he ate some calamari Mom bought, but he had to prepare it with his own specific oils and spices. I am almost certain he performed some kind of "purging" or ritual in the bathroom the next day; I saw him messing around with some device he bought at a pharmacy. I truly think this is a full-blown psychological disorder. He seemed to be punishing himself for breaking his own rules. We all had a massive blowout at home recently because he bought a water distiller; he’s been drinking nothing but distilled water for three weeks straight and refuses to stop, claiming it's the only "real" water. Next on his list is buying specialized stainless steel cookware, so we're currently in a standoff there. Through all this, he still works his HVAC job 7-8 hours a day, Monday through Friday, but he refuses to work Saturdays because he says he needs to "regenerate"... and I can see how much energy this is draining from him. He goes to bed at 9 PM, yet he has zero energy, despite insisting that everything he misses from "tainted" milk or meat is compensated for by his supplements. He’s always home on weekends and seems to be in constant physical discomfort, even though other guys his age don't have these issues—especially not at 25. He likely has incredibly brittle bones.

He’s become incredibly arrogant and condescending lately. He’s losing friends left and right, and as for a girlfriend? Not a chance. Apparently, he was playing some weird games with someone, but once she realized what was actually going on, she bailed fast. A friend of mine told me about her experience with him—he wasn't even interested in being affectionate; he was too busy obsessively checking tea bags to see if they contained traces of adhesive or lead. Honestly, he seemed more worried about bacteria than anything else. And don't even get me started on how much he talks about diet. He acts like such a know-it-all, judging me whenever I eat something "unhealthy," and he gives me these bizarre looks whenever I sneeze near him..

I honestly don't get why he acts this way. What is he even trying to achieve? Is there any hope for him to change, or is this just his new permanent personality? It's starting to worry me because, realistically, it doesn't seem right for a physically active 25-year-old guy—who's 6'1" and barely 130 lbs—to be acting like this, especially since he started drinking distilled water. My biggest concern is: what happens if he keeps this up? He’s never listened to anyone in his life. Since we don't have a father around, he's the oldest brother, and he constantly snaps at my mom; she can't say a single word to him without him blowing up. I'm genuinely scared his bone density might be shot, and a simple trip or fall could seriously break him, or he might end up with some major deficiency-related illness. So, what are the long-term consequences of this kind of behavior, and what do you all suggest I do? The core issue is that he’s so incredibly smug and patronizing, acting like he’s somehow superior to everyone else just because he thinks he’s the only one eating "correctly."

I suspect he was messing around with someone, but the second he started acting like a total creep and tracking her every move, she bailed. A friend told me about him later—apparently, when they were hanging out at a coffee shop, he didn't care about anything except obsessively checking his tea bags to see if there was any glue or lead residue in them. He wasn't even interested in being affectionate; I guess he was too paranoid about bacteria. And don't even get me started on how much he lectures about diet. He acts like such a know-it-all, judging me whenever I eat something "unhealthy," and he gives me these weird looks whenever I sneeze near him.

Why is he like this? What's the end goal here? Is there any way to help him, or is this just going to spiral forever? I'm honestly worried because it doesn't seem normal for a fit 25-year-old guy—who's 6'1" and only about 130 lbs—to be acting this way, especially since he started drinking distilled water. My biggest concern is: what actually happens if he keeps this up? He's never listened to anyone in his life. We don't have a dad around, and as the oldest brother, he constantly snaps at my mom. You can't say a single word to him without a fight. I'm terrified his bones might become brittle, to the point where a simple fall could wreck him, or that some deficiency-related illness will hit him. So, what are the long-term consequences of all this, and what do you guys suggest? I have to emphasize again: he is insanely arrogant and patronizing. He carries this intense sense of superiority just because he thinks he's the only one eating "correctly." That's really the core of the issue.

If I were you, I’d watch out for paranoia. I’m no expert, but I’ve dealt with this enough within my own family. Using the term "superiority" is actually a perfect way to describe a family member of mine, and it turned out to be nothing more than severe paranoia.

We're looking at a severe case of OCD mixed with some serious paranoia here... It’s entirely possible that falling down those deep rabbit holes with conspiracy theories or just being way too obsessed with finding some "hidden truth" triggered all this fear. You can't just force anything on him though, that'll backfire... Just try taking it slow, talk to him gently, and maybe get some honey in his diet for an energy boost. Good luck.

Look, if we’re being totally honest here, the guy finally woke up. He’s seeing everything for what it actually is. That’s really the only truth in this whole mess.

When I read the full post, the reality is that he’s definitely overreacting in certain spots—like, way too much. And hey, I’m not even going to touch the whole socialization thing. Though, based on what he’s saying, it does sound like he might have drifted a little too far off the deep end.
The thing is, you lose weight incredibly FAST once you decide to stop shoving all the junk people force down our throats (which is basically everything these days) and actually start paying attention to what goes into your body.
But here’s the kicker—you’re flushing out years of garbage accumulated from a lifetime of bad eating, so you need a massive variety of fruits, veggies, and specific herbs just to give your body what it actually needs to function.
I know this from my own life. Every time I get super strict about EVERYTHING, the weight drops off like crazy. And then, literally everyone starts asking if I’m sick or whatever... they look at me like I’m dying or completely lost my mind. Meanwhile, during those periods, I feel absolutely phenomenal, haha.
It’s honestly depressing how much this world has gone to hell, along with basic human awareness. Everything that used to be considered "normal" isn't anymore. Now, anyone who tries to help themselves or improve their life gets labeled as "sick," "stupid," or "crazy"... and I say that strictly from personal experience.
Honestly, there are so many times I’ll be sitting in a coffee shop and have zero clue what to order because EVERYTHING on the menu is trash. So I’ll just grab a sparkling water or a beer.

Speaking of distilled water... if someone is buying the bottled stuff for their iron just because, they need to stop immediately. That isn't the kind of distilled water that's healthy or good for your system. You have to distill it yourself using a distiller, and that’s not some quick twenty-minute process.
And yeah, he’s not wrong about needing distilled water. But again—we aren't talking about the store-bought distilled kind. Store-bought stuff doesn't come anywhere close to having the properties of "real" distilled water.

Look... this isn't the first time I've heard of someone going this far... and I really hope he settles down regarding this paranoia. Because the next stop on this train is depression and a total breakdown. Once he realizes there’s simply no way to live exactly how he wants without being forced to consume a mountain of crap 😉 one of my buddies has been stuck in some version of depression for years... he cracks a smile maybe once a month... he's constantly complaining and just miserable.
Instead of BEING happy because of his realizations and the fact that he now has the tools to help himself as much as possible 🙂 nope... he’s depressed because absolutely everything around us has gone to shit. And that’s how he’s going to drive himself totally insane.
And that could very well happen to your brother.

As for milk... the stuff we buy at the grocery store ISN'T milk. It’s garbage. Just like 99% of everything in the aisles. Literally. Maybe I exaggerated the 99% a bit, haha...
And coincidentally, I know a decent amount about bone health (in the context of "aging bones"). Older folks deal with bone issues for reasons that have nothing to do with just being "old."
But there’s no point in writing more about it... because almost everyone reading this will probably just say, "Oh man... what a nutcase." I haven't experienced 🙂
once. And this topic is endless; we could go on like this for days and days.🙂

My advice: let him eat whatever he wants. If he maintains some kind of balance, it's fine. But I get the feeling he's taking a ton of supplements all at once, and that is definitely not good. He should try replacing at least half of that stuff with plants and veggies to get what he needs naturally.
Just be careful not to push him too hard, or you're going to have a major blowout on your hands.
You already mentioned he’s withdrawing from everyone. Ask yourself why 🙂 maybe it's because he has nobody left to talk to about any of this or anyone to share it with.😉Honestly, it’s mostly because everyone treats him like he’s lost his mind.
Though, if you ask me, he’s actually way less unhinged than 99% of the people hanging around him. Whatever anyone wants to believe about it... 🙂

Good luck 👍

Yeah... he definitely hit a breaking point there.

driftingheron97 said:Maybe it was all that conspiracy theory rabbit hole stuff—trying to find the "truth" until it just turned into pure anxiety?

Exactly. He started waking up to things and it hit him way too fast. When people dive headfirst into those deep topics without any prep, it totally blows their minds—in a bad way.
He seriously needs someone who knows what they're talking about to sit down with him, talk him through it, and help steer him back toward some "calmer waters." But one thing's for sure: the more you guys judge him, the more he's gonna pull away from everyone.
