So, I was digging through some familiar faces earlier... anyone still remember the police psychologist Alex Cross? The name might not ring a bell for everyone, but maybe you’ll recall if I mention he nailed the role in two absolute killer thrillers played by Morgan Freeman (Kiss The Girls & Along Came & Along Came a Spider) — and he did it well. Since good stuff is hard to forget (and it helps that the guy is basically an icon here in the USA), it feels like the right time for a little reboot... mostly because Freeman was already a few decades older than the actual character back when those were filmed. It’s a chance to freshen things up, especially since there’s plenty of material to work with given there's a series of over 20 novels out there
Behind the scenes, we’ve got action veteran Rob Cohen (think > and xXx) calling the shots, while the cast... well, it's a pretty crowded room. We've got Jean Reno, Edward Burns, John C. McGinley, and Matthew Fox, but the role of Cross himself has gone to Tyler Perry—which, honestly, has already set off some protests from fans who don't think he's the right fit for the part. Still, the guy actually looks the part from the books, so we'll just have to wait and see how it shakes out. This isn't a straight adaptation of one specific book, but more like a mashup of various plot points from a few different novels. The core vibe is Cross investigating a family death and stumbling onto a villain who is basically the ultimate nightmare: a sociopathic, sadistic, manic killer. Whether it ends up being a tired cliché or a solid, gritty thriller like we rarely see these days... who knows. The trailer hasn't officially dropped yet (I'll post it here once it does), but there are a few stills floating around for this upcoming flick.
