I’m thinking about picking up a Dell Inspiron for schoolwork—you know, the usual stuff like browsing, watching movies, and maybe a bit of gaming on the side. I was wondering if this machine is actually any good... specifically, if the graphics card can handle anything decent when it comes to playing games.

I’ve linked the specs here

Nah. That processor isn't up to the task, and the integrated graphics? Forget about it. They aren't meant for actual gaming, just the bare essentials...

Basically, you need to prioritize getting the strongest graphics card possible within your budget. If the GPU is solid, the rest of the components usually fall into place. Or, just go read the megathread for laptop buyers and actually answer some of the questions there. If you do that, we can actually help you find the best bang for your buck...

Thanks—so, what’s your take on this one?

Basically, I'm looking at a laptop for some video editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, playing things like Roblox or Grand Theft Auto IV—and if it can actually handle Grand Theft Auto V :P, even better—plus just the usual stuff like watching movies, browsing, Skype, and getting through my work on Microsoft Office... I'd prefer a 15.6'' screen, and I'm aiming for a price point around $1000. It definitely needs an HDMI port, a webcam, a mic, and all those standard ports you'd expect. I'm not looking for Unix; I need macOS. As for the specs, I guess the better the graphics card and processor, the better. I'll need at least 4GB of RAM—though more would be ideal—and plenty of storage space, maybe around 1 TB.

This is basically the cheapest way you can get by if you just want to play casually. If you're looking to get serious about gaming, you’re going to need to set aside a lot more cash.

Thanks, I'll give it some thought
