Chrome keeps crashing - memory issues

For the last ten days or so, Chrome has been crashing on its own during normal use. It happens right after I get a message that roughly says, "memory too low, close programs to prevent data loss..".

The issue is that I've had this PC for two years now, and this behavior only started about ten days ago. My workload hasn't changed—I’m running Chrome, Excel, and maybe two other programs at once, just like I have for the past two years. But it never acted like this before. Now, I open about ten tabs in Chrome and the whole browser just collapses.

I'm running Norton Free; ran a scan yesterday and found nothing. The OS is Windows 7. There's plenty of space left on the Hard Drive.

Could the RAM be failing? What's actually causing this, and how do I fix it? 😕

When you're running Chrome and Excel at the same time, try opening up your Task Manager to see how much RAM is actually being used—it’s no secret that Google Chrome can be a bit of a resource hog. If you're sitting on just 2GB of RAM, I'd honestly suggest looking into an upgrade to at least 4GB. It makes such a difference, doesn't it?

I've got 8GB of RAM. The issue is, this behavior only started about ten days ago. It isn't even happening under heavy load—it's just constant. Is it possible a stick of RAM actually burned out? I don't know enough about hardware to be sure. Or could it be some kind of malware that Norton can't pick up?

Chrome crashed on me again last night. Anyone got any actual advice on how to fix this?

Are your other programs running okay?

Have you tried doing a quick reinstall of Chrome?

Maybe you could run memtest, just to be safe? It might be worth letting it spin through a scan for a few hours...

Clear your history, wipe the cookies, and ditch any plugins you've got loaded in Chrome.

Has anyone here actually updated Chrome to the latest version in the last week or so? Might be worth checking if that’s where the glitch is hiding...

Honestly, this whole thing reminds me of what I went through maybe a year or two back. I wasn't just using Chrome for casual browsing—I was relying on it for work. And man, out of nowhere, my PC would just freeze up right in the middle of doing basically nothing. Everything seemed fine, except there was zero memory left. Who was hogging it all? Chrome. Every single forum was blowing up with people complaining about the same thing, and Google kept giving those canned "we're looking into it" responses. I eventually hit my limit, ditched Chrome, and switched over to Firefox. Honestly? Best move I ever made.
