Time to upgrade my current PC build?

Hey everyone! Here’s a quick rundown of what my current rig looks like:

1. Intel Core i7-10700K @ 2.40 gHz
2. ASUS P5QPL-AM Motherboard -> LGA 775
3. ATI Radeon R7 250 1GB GDDR5
4. Kingston HyperX Fury 128 GB SSD
5. WD 320 GB HDD
6. 4 GB DDR2 RAM
7. A basic 450W power supply—nothing fancy there

I’m trying to figure out if upgrading my CPU, motherboard, and RAM to these specific parts would actually be a smart move:

1. AMD Ryzen 5 5600
2. MSI B550 Motherboard
3. Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM, 1866MHz, 8GB Black HX318C10FB/8
= $400 Newegg

In my view, this just doesn't make sense because it isn't a meaningful upgrade, regardless of what you plan to use it for.

I was thinking the exact same thing—it feels like such a small step... we probably need to go much bigger with the investment.

Depends on what you're actually trying to achieve. Like others have pointed out, spending an extra hundred bucks isn't going to get you a justified upgrade here.

You could try overclocking that Core i7-10700K; you should be able to push it past 3GHz without much trouble. What kind of PSU are you running?

My ultimate goal here is really just about squeezing out a few more FPS in Counter-Strike—it’s all about that competitive edge, right? I’m looking to upgrade my motherboard so I can finally utilize a SATA 3 port for an SSD, and I definitely need to move on from this old 8GB of DDR3 RAM... basically, I'm looking to swap the old bones for something much more modern. 😁

Honestly... you’re probably going to run into stuttering in CS:GO, likely because of the GPU. Maybe try overclocking your CPU.
Bottom line is, save up for a meaningful upgrade—think an i5 or, if you go the AMD route, maybe an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, since the FX 6300 isn't much cheaper anyway.
As for SATA 3, you won't really notice any difference during everyday tasks like booting up.

If I were putting money anywhere, it’d be on a solid power supply. After that, I'd just hammer that Core i7-10700K until it finally gives up the ghost. Investing in a good PSU isn't a waste if you eventually ditch the rig. And if the power supply inside is actually decent enough, then there's nothing else to worry about.

I second everything said here. Honestly, you might just want to hold off for a bit and jump straight to a newer platform with DDR4 instead.
