I'm honestly just asking because it feels like whenever someone tries to appeal a ban, they just get handed some random excuse and the ban sticks regardless.
The rulebook needs a serious overhaul—and seriously, I don't get why there's even a rule against calling out the mods.
The real issue here is the moderation team itself... it feels like they’re totally resistant to change and just refuse to see when things aren't working properly.

Personally, I'm just hoping I don't catch a ban for speaking up about the moderators, since my point is more about the general lack of progress around here.
Just look at the search function—it's been broken or disabled for over a month now.

You can go ahead and lock this thread and give me nothing, or you could actually suggest something that might make this forum better—whether that's tweaking the rules, fixing the layout, or looking at how we're being moderated.

Look, if we decide a ban was actually unfair, those bans get overturned. Please don't try to tell me you've "never seen it happen" or that it's "super rare," because:
a) this entire PDF is packed with examples of that happening
b) it actually happens quite a bit, averaging several times a month
c) just because most bans aren't overturned doesn't mean they were deserved. Every single ban comes with an explanation and goes through a full review by moderators, super-mods, and admins.

neongull93 said:The rules need an upgrade, and I honestly don't see why there's even a rule against commenting on the moderators.

The reason you can't go around critiquing moderator actions within individual threads is that we have an entire dedicated PDF for exactly that—which is the very one you started this thread in! Every thread has its purpose, and every PDF has its own specific topic. This one, "Messages, Grievances, and Feedback," is specifically designed to handle moderation issues.

neongull93 said:The real issue with this forum is the moderators themselves, since it feels like they’re resistant to change and won't admit when something isn't working properly.

Seriously, please read the rules in this PDF because this kind of back-and-forth is just a waste of everyone's time. If you have a legitimate issue, lay it out, explain it, and prove it. We do adjust the rules from time to time to fit the current state of the community, so you can't really claim things never change. On the flip side, making constant changes without a good reason makes zero sense—it just confuses users and makes running the forum a nightmare. That said, we are always wide open to constructive suggestions.

Change? The only change we actually need is to get rid of the moderators who abuse their power to terrorize anyone they disagree with. There are a few of them on certain ideological threads who constantly target users with conservative viewpoints. They literally hunt people down by issuing bans under the most common excuse of "trolling," stretching the definition to cover the most benign comments where there isn't even any actual trolling happening.
Of course, you've always got the super-mods there to "cover" for them and justify those unfair bans.
It’s honestly sad how much this forum's political section has gone downhill. It all seemed to start around last September when the migrant crisis hit, and then this kind of policy started rolling out—maybe even by order from the top brass.
But regardless of whether it's an official directive or just pure ego, the moderation is a disaster. I haven't been here since yesterday, so I've definitely noticed the difference over my ten years on this forum.

You shouldn't be critiquing mod work scattered all over the different threads—we have an entire PDF dedicated to that, which is exactly what you opened this thread in. Every thread has its own purpose, and every PDF has its own specific focus. This one, "Messages, Complaints, and Feedback," is specifically for moderation issues.

Take a look at the rules in this PDF, because honestly, this kind of back-and-forth is just a waste of breath. If you've got a legitimate issue, lay it out, explain it, and prove it. Rules change here from time to time—sometimes a little, sometimes a lot—to keep up with how the site is running, so you can't really claim "it's always been this way." Changing things constantly without a good reason makes zero sense; it just confuses people and makes running the forum a nightmare. We're always down for constructive suggestions, though.

The bolded part is fine, I guess, but you really should allow for some off-topic talk here and there, otherwise you're just killing the natural flow of conversation.
Like, when I started that thread comparing phones, once I finally decided which one I wanted, I was supposed to go hunt down an existing Android thread or start a whole new thing just to ask two or three quick questions? That feels overkill.

I've compared this situation to dealing with US bureaucracy—you know, where it's so much red tape that you feel like you're losing your mind being sent from one office to another.

Also, point me toward the thread where all the rules and their updates are listed.
If it doesn't exist, make it, because frankly, I'm not taking your word for it.
And if the rules were actually that solid, we wouldn't be seeing this many complaints in the first place.

So, I was wondering... why did velvetmaker3 end up getting a card? What exactly was this legendary "subforum rule" he supposedly broke? It feels a little upside down—you go to the specific subforum meant for filing appeals, you lodge an appeal, and then boom, you get hit with a card for breaking the rules of the very place designed for complaints. 🙏

Every subreddit works differently, so the guidelines vary from one sub to the next. I'm not exactly sure what the specific update schedule looks like for each individual community, but on the main Politics sub, you can just check the thread title to see the date of the last rule change.

So now we're gonna have political debates happening in the moderator lounge? Great. Just great. -__-

I honestly don't know what kind of weird logic they use to tweak things from time to time, but if you check out the Politics section, the date of the last rule update is right there in the thread title for the rules.

But does it actually say what the old rule was versus the new one? Like, do they give an example or a reason for why they changed it in the first place?

neongull93 said:I think what’s written in bold makes total sense, but honestly, we really ought to allow for a little bit of off-topic chatter every now and then. If we don't, you end up killing the natural flow of the conversation and making everything feel way too rigid.

Look, I don't want to be the fun police here, but let's keep things organized. A little bit of off-topic chatter is usually fine by me as long as we don't lose the plot and get back to the main discussion quickly. If someone starts a really great, high-quality side conversation, though, let's not clutter up the main thread—just move that over to its own dedicated topic so everyone can enjoy it without derailing the actual subject at hand!

neongull93 said:Also, could you point me toward the specific thread where all the rules are listed out and where we can track any updates or changes they make?
Look, if it isn't already there, just go ahead and make it—because honestly, I’m not exactly taking your word for it!

Look, we’ve got our main community guidelines pinned right at the very top of the forum, and most of our PDF documents—well, almost all of them—have their own specific internal rules tucked away too, usually set as a pinned top-level thread. Honestly, it's just common courtesy and basic logic to actually sit down and read through those rules before you jump into the conversation. It makes everything run a lot smoother for everyone involved!

We’ve got the main rules pinned at the top of the forum, and most of our sub-sections have their own specific guidelines right there on the landing page as featured posts. Honestly, common sense and basic etiquette dictate that you should probably give those a quick read before jumping into an argument.

Oh, come on... I've been hanging out on plenty of other forums and none of them felt this restrictive.

That really comes down to how different communities operate. Here, we’re focused specifically on this one space. Our current rules are just a reflection of how this forum has evolved over time, and as the community grows and shifts, those rules have to shift right along with it. There might be stretches where things feel pretty stagnant, but looking at the big picture, everything changes significantly over the years. What worked perfectly fine back when there were a fraction of the members and half the activity just doesn't cut it anymore—just like what we have now won't be quite enough for where we're headed in the future. So, we'll keep adjusting things to make sure they stay better for everyone.

If you recall, the old-school mods used to get swapped out whenever they went overboard and the users staged a revolt. ☕

You can find the general forum guidelines here
Most subforums maintain their own specific sets of rules, which serve as pinned topics to supplement the general ones; you can check the specific rules for this section right here

Off-topic discussion is permitted in some areas but strictly forbidden in others, though even where it is allowed, there are limits—if it’s prohibited, it will be clearly stated either in the PDF rulebook or within the opening post of the thread itself.

Given what seems to have triggered this debate, I'll clarify that in the mobile technology section, we allow a minimal amount of off-topic chatter, because frankly, it makes zero sense to let a thread about the Samsung Galaxy S7 turn into a shouting match about cheap brands from overseas. It is standard practice to direct users toward the appropriate threads to ensure the subforum stays organized, and all of this is explicitly laid out in the subforum rules; if you genuinely believe there is room for improvement, feel free to reach out to us with your suggestions.

However, responding to a moderator's routine request to move a topic with such blatant hostility and vulgarity is unacceptable and will be met with sanctions. Everything can be handled with a bit of basic decency.

The current rules are basically just a byproduct of how this community has evolved over time—as the site grows and shifts, the rulebook has to shift too. There are stretches where nothing seems to change much, but looking at the long game, everything evolves. What worked back when there were only a handful of users and way less traffic just doesn't cut it anymore, much like how what works today probably won't be enough for where we're headed down the road. So yeah, we’ll keep tweaking things to make them better.

You keep "promising" improvements or changes down some hypothetical timeline, but I’m just not seeing it. If you ask any moderator, they all seem perfectly happy with the status quo, even though it’s obvious something isn't working right—I mean, people are getting warnings and strikes every single day for even the most trivial stuff.
So, honestly, I just want you mods to actually step up and take a hard look at whether these rules are actually serving us or if they need a total overhaul.
Especially since you guys are the ones handing out the penalties.

From where I'm sitting, it looks like most people are just doing their part by following the rules, while everyone else is just getting swept away.
The whole point of a community like this should be moving forward and improving, not just sticking to a "my way or the highway" mentality.

I haven't been super active here lately, but I've been trying to get back into it recently.
And frankly, you aren't making it easy with all the warnings and closing threads before they even have a chance to turn into actual interesting discussions.
But man, the biggest blow was definitely disabling the search feature.
You guys really need to be transparent with us, because it feels impossible to make progress no matter what you do.

Each sub-forum usually has its own specific guidelines, which are pinned at the top and act as an addendum to the main rules. Here are the rules for this specific section:

Off-topic posting is allowed in some areas and strictly forbidden in others. When it is allowed, there are limits, and if it's prohibited, that will always be clearly stated either in the general rules PDF or in the opening post of the thread itself.

Given what seems to be driving this discussion, I can tell you that on the mobile tech board, we allow a little bit of off-topic chatter, but it has to be minimal—it wouldn't make sense to let a thread about a Samsung Galaxy S7 devolve into a debate about Chinese smartphones. Directing users to the appropriate thread is just standard procedure to keep the sub-forum organized, and it's all laid out in the rules. If you feel like there's room for improvement, please feel free to reach out with suggestions.

However, responding with hostility or being vulgar when a moderator makes a standard request to move a topic is going to result in sanctions. Everything can be handled civilly.

It’s not just that, though—I see other people getting hit with warnings every single day.
And as for that argument we had, I wouldn't even take it seriously; it was just a comment that hit the nail on the head regarding how you were handling things, whether you were following the rules or not.

Apparently, we aren't allowed to talk about how catastrophic the moderation on the politics board has become, but honestly, it’s just terrible. Some of these mods have turned this entire forum into a complete caricature of what it used to be. I wonder if the owner even realizes his moderators are driving people away and ruining the community, or maybe there’s some top-down order telling both him and the staff to push a specific agenda through malicious moderation—because I don't know how else to describe this systematic terrorizing. Sure, anyone can make a mistake once in a while, even a mod, but what’s happening here doesn't feel like an accident; it feels intentional, like they're trying to stifle any opposing views.

The real issue here is the moderation team itself—it feels like they’re totally resistant to change and can't see when things aren't working properly.

1. You got banned because you broke the PDFov rules, which aren't just tucked away in the fine print; they're literally bolded and enlarged for emphasis.
2. You think the rules should change to "improve" the PDFov, but none of the moderators here actually agree with you.

To wrap this up: The moderators aren't looking for changes because we believe the current rules are doing their job. Our reasoning is pretty simple: we implemented these rules specifically because the way threads were running before them was a total mess.

Well, one group replaces the other, and now people are just bitching about the current crew more than they ever did about the old ones.

I honestly feel like we’re just stuck in this endless loop where it won't be long before everyone starts throwing shade at the new guys and demanding yet another complete overhaul of the management team.

And let's be real, most of us users are kind of responsible for our own mess here.
Not too long ago, some guy named Anton started a solid thread about cutting down on all the political spam. The discussion actually started off pretty decent, but then inevitably, a few people had to jump in and start whining about their warnings right there in the middle of the debate.
I recently tried to kick off my own thread aimed at making the community vibes a little less toxic and more respectful, but again, certain people just had to come in and absolutely wreck the conversation. In the end, I got accused of playing lawyer, even though I was just trying my hardest to clarify my original point. But yeah, no luck there—too many trolls just looking to derail everything.

@ rustydrifter10 /irreparable 😁/

Common sense and basic logic both suggest that inquiries should be met with an actual response—whether you follow the principle that there are no stupid questions, or the ethical standard that claims should be corrected when wrong. Experience, and I am certainly not alone in this observation, suggests that what we actually see is a pattern of deafness from the same group of moderators. It is evident that you attempt to provide a vent for frustration here, yet in practice, it is a hollow gesture because the damage inflicted upon the thread is largely irreparable. ... how does one say the train has left the station if you are attempting to grasp my point. I concede that in most instances you are correct, whether by logical necessity or by the rulebook, but volume is not a metric for quality. Users report posts and nothing happens even when their purpose is glaringly obvious; the moderators ignore them, only acting once they are called out right here. This applies to my own minor grievances and even several posts sent to me via private message by a certain honorable opponent who abandoned this topic entirely because the moderators failed to take any decisive action regarding such posts.

If grievance threads exist at all, what is their utility if the moderators—those very same individuals being called out—simply ignore the inquiries? You might find it hard to believe, but even if I were to write with clinical precision and zero entropy... I would still be met with silence. At this stage, I find a certain grim satisfaction in collecting more red flags, as I have become quite the collector of them.
Furthermore, regardless of your commendable advice regarding reading carefully, it remains a duty in reality to decisively state the grounds and specific lines violated, rather than offering mere descriptive summaries of how a rule was broken.
It is easy to claim we are being subjective when we collide with your regulations, yet exceptions do exist. My recommendation, if you lack the habit or the inclination, is at least to attempt to prevent the staff responsible for site cleanliness from deleting whatever simply doesn't suit them. To cite a recent example: Pringles uses a joke about herding sheep as a way to insult forum members, yet when presented with a video production like Benny Hill - Naked Lust in Sinful Sweden, they suddenly find themselves offended or deem it inappropriate. There are more instances, but this is sufficient to show that the rain is going to start pouring incessantly.
I trust the direction of my gaze is clear.

I honestly get this feeling that we're just spinning our wheels here—like it's all happening in circles—and I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't take long before people start throwing stones at the new administration until they end up getting replaced too... just a cycle, really...

Of course, no political lineup lasts forever. They tend to lose their way over time, especially when things start getting a bit too heavy-handed with the authority side of things.

Look, the mods talk about this stuff pretty regularly; they know their PDFov inside and out—they understand the flow, the structure, the typical user base, and the overall quality of the discussions and the people involved. Like I mentioned before, changes usually happen in small increments, mostly through specific tweaks or fine-tuning what’s already there. Your comments feel incredibly vague and non-specific, almost like you're describing a total meltdown when that's just not the case. Personally, I don't think the forum is in nearly as bad of shape as your posts make it sound, though I definitely recognize there's room for improvement—which is exactly what's being worked on. We can always aim for perfection, but at the end of the day, the forum is constantly evolving.
