Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ˜

Quick question: can I swap out my AT&T router? Right now I'm stuck with a Motorola RAZR, but I really want to switch over to a Nokia 3310. Both are from AT&T. Iโ€™ve been scouring Google, but everything just points back to some old tech forums and I can't find anyone who's actually done this.
A buddy of mine tried to swap his gear before. He reached out to AT&T for help, but they wouldn't budge on it. He managed to get the internet working, but his VoIP was totally deadโ€”maybe because of a bad router or somethingโ€”so now I'm worried if switching is even doable. My setup includes DSL phone and TV through AT&T.
The reason I'm looking to switch is simple: this Motorola RAZR keeps dropping my connection during games. I've seen people online saying this specific model is notorious for causing disconnects.

I actually ordered a Nokia 3310 off eBay, and it should be arriving tomorrow. I just need to know if it's possible to make the swap and how to go about it.
If anyone has a spare minute to help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Iโ€™m not sure how the settings are configured, so thereโ€™s no guarantee this will actually work. You might just need to tweak some parameters, or you might have to go through a full reprogramming. Maybe try asking over in the networking subforum.

Honestly, I don't know if that's even a smart move... Are you aware that technical support at AT&T (and pretty much any other provider) can remotely access your gear to change every single setting, or even push a BIOS upgrade? They'll see the changes the second you plug it in and know immediately that you've messed with the router.๐Ÿคท

Who knows if they'll react to it, but one thing's for sureโ€”they'll definitely know.

Look, you can swap out that router if you want. Once you get it hooked up, if the connection isn't pulling everything correctly, just give the helpdesk a call. Tell them straight up that you're installing your own gear and ask them to perform a lock/unlock on the line.

So you actually called support and they told you that? Good for you. ๐Ÿ‘

I recently swapped out my old Nokia 3310 for another one, then hooked that second unit up via Speedport, and both times I ran straight into the same damn issues with the helpdesk guys. It used to be that you could just manually input all the data directly into the router, easy peasy. But ever since they moved everything under ACS, you have to deal with this constant headache of locking and unlocking ports just to get anything done.

Fixed it..
Got everything hooked up.. internet and cable are running smooth. I called AT&T and let them know my old router (Motorola RAZR) was acting up, so I picked up a new Nokia 3310 instead. After a bit of back-and-forth, they reset everything on their end and now it's all working perfectly along with the VoIP.

Hey.. thanks!

darkowl72, a few years back they swapped out my dead router for a shiny new one outside of my contract period... no new commitment needed. ๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™ve honestly realized that ever since I finished my commitmentโ€”which was over a year ago nowโ€”they've been way more chill with me, you know? Like, suddenly the service feels different...๐Ÿ˜

Exactly. You just have to hint that you might walk, and suddenly everyone's your best friend๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Haven't talked to them in ages. Knock on wood...๐Ÿ˜
