Hey everyone,

I’m running into a bit of a headache with my graphics card (or at least I think it might be the GPU) and AutoCAD.
Basically, when I'm working, zooming in on drawings, panning around, or selecting objects, everything feels sluggish—it’s got this constant, annoying lag.

What’s really tripping me up is that if I open the exact same file on my workstation at the office, it runs perfectly smooth—and that machine only has an Intel Core i5-2400, integrated graphics, and just 4GB of RAM!

My current setup is:

AMD FX-8300 with ASUS M5A97 R2
Asus M5A97 R2.0
Adata DDR3 8Gb 1600 MHz
WD Caviar Blue 1TB SATA3

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

I already tried toggling the "hardware acceleration" setting within AutoCAD, but honestly, it didn't make a lick of difference.

I also made sure my graphics drivers are fully updated, but it’s the same story—nothing changed. No improvement at all.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this stuttering during work?

Everything else on this PC—gaming, browsing, even just using Office—runs lightning fast. It's just this one program.

I would really appreciate some help here.

Best,

Try disabling Windows 7 Aero and see if that clears things up. Also, just a heads-up—sometimes an antivirus can act up and cause these kinds of glitches, so you might want to try turning that off too.

Tried all that, but unfortunately, I'm still seeing the exact same thing.

Any other ideas?

You might want to run a quick check on that hard drive—maybe use something like HD Tune to look over the health status or run an error scan.

Look, anything is possible, but I’d bet my life you'll run into a different headache before you ever blame the GPU or the hardware. It might even be a dud processor, but honestly? It's most likely an AutoCAD issue. Your best bet is to scour the Autodesk forums; there are tons of potential fixes floating around there once you start digging.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autoc...s/td-p/3249306

You'll find all sorts of weirdness on those boards. For example, if you leave AutoCAD running indefinitely without ever closing it, it eventually eats up more and more memory until the whole thing just crashes. 😬

One fix that actually makes sense for what you're dealing with could be this:

"Closing your LAYER palette (not just hiding it) probably would have resolved your issue with the unreconciled layers: try it next time it happens.

And unless you crave the info because you work with a team of users that constantly change your XREFs, you can turn off that "unreconciled" feature."

Since he claims everything else runs smoothly, he might want to try a clean reinstall of the software.

Hey everyone,

Closing out the layer palette didn't really do much—maybe improved things by a whopping 5%, if I'm being honest.

I even tried running AutoCAD 2016, but nope, it’s the exact same headache.

Is it actually possible that this Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti and AutoCAD just plain "dislike" each other? Or maybe it's an issue between AutoCAD and my AMD FX-8300?

Also, does it even make sense for me to swap out this old HDD for an SSD at this point?

I'm honestly at a loss here—I don't know what else to try.

I haven't been able to find any real solutions on the usual forums, so I'd truly appreciate any advice you guys can throw my way.

Oh, and just for the record, I ran HD Tune and it didn't flag any errors on the hard drive.

Have you run any tests on the HDD? Or checked the RAM with MemTest86?

If those don't fix the issue, I think instead of hunting for hardware culprits, you’d be better off just reinstalling the OS and the software entirely. Before you go that route, though, maybe try a complete driver wipe using Driver Sweeper (especially if you had Nvidia drivers installed previously on this OS), then perform a totally fresh driver installation.

If those don't turn up anything, honestly—before you go hunting for a hardware failure—it might be smarter to just wipe the OS and reinstall everything from scratch, including the software. Maybe even try stripping out all the old drivers first using something like DDU (especially if you had Nvidia cards on this setup previously), and then do a totally clean driver installation.

MemTest86 passed without any issues, and the HDD looks fine too.

I ended up installing the new "radeon-crimson-15.12" drivers, and man, it actually feels better now—definitely faster.

Looks like it’s not even a hardware issue or a driver problem. It's just the app itself glitching out under specific conditions...

One of these should hopefully fix it...
