To be honest, I’ve always had a much stronger craving for salt than for sugar, but lately, that urge for something salty has become almost overwhelming. It gets to the point where if a craving hits me in the middle of the night, I’m prepared to drive across town just to find something savory.🤣
Since I’m dealing with frequent digestive issues, it feels like I’m constantly losing electrolytes through my system,🤷 so I end up drinking a massive amount of water.
On the flip side, it feels a bit counterintuitive because I struggle with hypoglycemia quite often, yet I almost never feel the need to reach for sweets.😕
There have been nights where, if I haven't eaten anything for dinner, I’ll wake up drenched in a cold sweat, shaking and feeling completely drained. It’s like I only have a tiny two or three-minute window before I actually collapse before I can get some glucose into my system. Once I do, the relief is instant.
I’m trying to wrap my head around how this connection between salt and sugar works, because to me, these two sensations seem to be pulling in opposite directions. Does anyone know what kind of blood work or specific tests I should ask my doctor for to figure this out?

Have you checked your blood pressure lately? Every time mine drops, I feel this insane craving where I just want to lick salt straight out of the shaker because my body is screaming for something savory. 🤷

I’ve always struggled with low blood pressure, but lately, things seem to have finally leveled out into a more normal range. It usually sits right around 120/80, with my bottom number hovering near 110/65

First thing you need to do is see a primary care physician and get a full biochemistry panel done.
Then, have them refer you to a specialist, either a nephrologist or an endocrinologist.
It would be wise to run a lipid panel, CRP, fasting glucose, HbA1c, and check your Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Chloride, AST, ALT, GGT, creatinine, insulin, urea, and urates.
You also really need to check aldosterone (serum/urine), ACTH, cortisol, plasma renin activity, and get a renal ultrasound specifically looking at the adrenal glands—maybe even a CT scan if needed. Don't forget a 24-hour urine collection.

hey there,

I'm honestly not quite sure where this belongs on the board, so I'll just drop it here and hope for the best. I haven't been able to find much information online regarding what might be going on when someone starts feeling like every single meal they eat is completely tasteless, to the point where they feel like they absolutely have to add extra salt just to get any flavor at all.

For the last month, I’ve been absolutely craving salt. Like, everything I eat needs an extra shake of seasoning, even if my family keeps telling me I'm turning my food into a salt lick. In the last six months, I’ve dropped from 210 lbs down to 148, and the goal is to shave off another 20. Anyone else deal with crazy salt cravings when they're losing weight this fast?
