The SATA controller on your motherboard isn't picking up the drive because it’s one of those older models that lacks auto-detection support.
Your new drive is actually capable of running at that slower legacy speed, you just have to manually tell it to do so. Check this out:

If you scroll down a bit, you'll see a diagram of the back of your new drive showing two rows of pins with their numbering. Based on the diagram, you need to bridge pins 5 and 6—and only those two—to get the drive to work with your setup.
Bridge them and give it a shot.
