Folks, I’m looking for some perspective on which route makes more sense here.

Seagate BarraCuda 1TB with a 60-month warranty ........$212

or

WD Blue 1TB with a 24-month warranty ............$164

or perhaps something else entirely?

What’s the consensus on those 3 TB options—for instance,
Seagate SkyHawk
or
Seagate IronWolf

I’m planning to drop this into a desktop rig just to act as bulk storage—mostly movies, TV shows, and that sort of thing.

You really need to set a budget first—if you don't have one, then just look for the best price-to-capacity ratio. Personally, I think 3TB drives are the sweet spot right now. Since you're mostly just using this for data storage, you probably don't need anything high-performance.

So, am I looking at the Green series then?

I’ve got a 1TB WD Green sitting in my rig right now—well, it's been running for nearly three years straight—and I have to say, it’s been absolute rock solid. It’s been working non-stop from sunrise to sunset, serving as my primary system drive before I eventually upgraded to an SSD, and now it just handles secondary tasks.
Granted, the speed isn't exactly anything to write home about—hardly a speed demon—but that isn't really my priority when I'm just talking about bulk storage.

My budget is hovering around $333. I was originally thinking about picking up two 1TB drives, but then I caught a glimpse of the prices on those 3TB models and, frankly, I'm a little thrown by the math. 🙂

The bottom line for me is reliability. Does the actual dependability of the drive drop off once you start scaling up the capacity?

You could probably just grab that Seagate 3 TB or maybe spend a little more on a Seagate IronWolf 3 TB; I think they're actually some of the cheapest options at Best Buy right now.😬

In that case, you should definitely go with the 3TB drive—it fits right within your budget. As for the brand, I guess you'll have to decide that yourself, though you really can't go wrong either way.

Yeah, even I was a bit surprised when I stumbled upon that deal. 🙂
I'm still waiting on shipping since I'm out in Los Angeles.

Just one more thing. Is there any tangible difference—aside from the RPM—between Seagate and WD? Specifically, why is the WD priced about $50 higher when it actually has a lower rotational speed?

WD red is designed specifically for Small mi Systems that have 1 to 5 Drive bays
that are built for reliability. These drives undergo heavy testing to ensure they can handle
the constant grind of a 24x7 setup, meeting all the specific needs
found in home or small business setups.
Basically, you might not even need them; you could probably just grab a Seagate instead, which I think is faster.

A NAS? Hmm, while having one at home wouldn't be a bad idea, I don't really have any specific plans for it yet 🙂

I think I'll just go with the Seagate option—I haven't actually used their stuff before, so I might as well give it a shot 🙂

Thanks for the help 😉

I noticed yesterday they were advertising some sort of "web price," but I'm not sure what the fine print entails. Honestly, you're much better off checking Nabavka.net instead.
