Hi there,

I was just looking through the archives and I'm curious why certain threads have been locked off in this PDF—especially the ones that actually matter, like:

The "Hey Moderator" thread, which hasn't been touched since April 9th,

Comments on current members' profile pictures and

The local institution

...instead of being actively moderated (you know, flagging posts or removing the troublemakers)? Also, any word on when we might see a moderator actually stepping up to handle this kind of work?

Is there any indication of whether these threads will be reopened for discussion within a reasonable timeframe?

Looking forward to a quick and straightforward response. Best,

Dana Fox5.

Oh, look at the moderator—locking this down because you guys started it

Comments are closed because you all triggered it

The institution in question is just a forum thread—it's not mandatory, and honestly, it probably won't be reopened anytime soon

Please give this some more thought. It isn’t actually that hard to spot who’s constantly derailing the threads; we’re really just talking about one or two individuals here. It feels a bit unfair to everyone else involved, and if you take a quick look back through the last few pages and just call out the specific people causing the friction, I think things could settle down quite nicely.

I don't want to sound like I'm acting all high and mighty or pretending I'm looking out for everyone else, so feel free to check my own post history—if you find anything, go ahead and call me out on it. But honestly, it just doesn't seem right that ten different people have to deal with the headache caused by just one or two troublemakers, especially since I happen to be caught in the middle of it myself.🙂

Best,

Terry Collins9 said:Hey mod, lock the thread since you guys basically started this mess yourselves.

Comments are closed because you guys triggered this whole thing.

The institution is just a common thread; it’s not mandatory and probably won't be reopened anytime soon.

I feel like we might have had a bit of a misunderstanding, so I'll try rephrasing my question one more time.

Basically, I want to know why topics in the PDF are being shut down in sequence rather than actually being moderated (like banning specific posts or removing problematic users)?

And if anyone actually knows, why was the institution locked?

Well, it wasn't Terry Collins9 who shut it down—it was the FDA. Honestly, I doubt they can even reopen it anytime soon, though they definitely have a better handle on the situation than most.

It looks like we might see it back online by Christmas, assuming we don't have to wait on whoever pulled the plug in the first place.

If you ask me, the reason for the shutdown was pretty silly. All they really needed to do was comb through those last ten pages and sort out the penalties and the peaceful zones.

Before this mess, things had been running smoothly without any major headaches for quite a while.

P.S. Besides, I'm not entirely sure what they were even expecting from an institution like that?🙄

goldenranger30 said:Mods aren't required to hang out in the chat. They've got the right to lock any thread, whether it's temporary or permanent, if they decide it's causing too much drama. These chat threads aren't some obligation for the site owners; they're just there at the mods' discretion. If the mod team decides enough, the thread is gone. Pobosutljanin has total freedom to shut down any topic, including chats, if he thinks the quality isn't up to par for this site, or if users are just constant low-life trolls attacking each other. My advice? Just play nice and follow the rules. I'm sure as hell not gonna beg him to reopen a thread just so you guys can go back to fighting...

No point in starting this thread when the answer was already posted earlier...

Phil, you don't need to keep forcing your way into conversations where nobody actually asked for your input.

The reason this thread exists is because I'm looking for a response from the mods and admins, not from you or Jackal. If I ever decide I need your take on things, I'll be sure to reach out.

And just to be clear, this isn't just about the one thread regarding the Institution.

Look, I appreciate the input, but it's not what I'm looking for here. Best.

I am still waiting for the forum staff to address my questions before I bother engaging in any further debate with them.

The issue is that Terry Collins9 just can't keep up with reading and moderating everything when you guys are posting so much. Honestly, some of you are clearly getting emboldened by the volume, leading people to post nonsense they’d never dream of saying anywhere else.

We need to find more moderators, but finding them on a site like this isn't easy. This isn't some niche hobby where you can just find an expert; it's a mix of all sorts of things.

I locked the thread because the insults were becoming constant. I'm going to try to go through the last 20 pages tonight or tomorrow to hand out some bans—maybe even partial suspensions—and then we can try starting a new thread to see if that actually fixes the behavior.

As for those other locked threads, the problem is you guys just moved the exact same argument over to a different topic.

Nathan Turner3, thanks for the quick and clear response. 🙂

I guess I should add...

Nathan Turner3 said:The reality is that Terry Collins9 just can't keep up with reading through this thread while trying to moderate it. You guys are posting way too much. It’s clearly emboldening some of you to act out and post things here that you wouldn't dream of saying anywhere else.

Look, even if Terry Collins9 doesn't have the time to read every single thread, we all know he's keeping tabs on what’s going on. And honestly, we all know he knows. It’s just how he operates.

I just got hit with a massive wave of reports for harassment.
I was actually there myself when the insults started flying around in the chat.

The thing is, he’s basically admitted he refuses to take a red card, which pretty much sums it up. That’s exactly why we’ve ended up here—after a ridiculous amount of back-and-forth, endless deadlocks, and several failed attempts to get this sorted, we’re left with this thread titled... Enter at your own risk. Let's just keep the insults coming.

Evidence:

We need to find someone else to join the moderation team, but honestly, finding the right fit on Reddit isn't exactly easy. It’s not like we’re looking for an expert in one specific niche where you can just scout for high-quality contributors. Instead, it's a mix of all sorts of things, which makes finding that perfect balance of knowledge pretty tough.

I agree that we really need to find a moderator who will actually step up and handle things properly. Moderating. There are plenty of topics floating around, but I don't see any reason why I’d need to chime in on everything. If those are the rules you guys live by, fine—it doesn't make much sense for me to go sticking my nose into every single thread.

I just want to say that locking this thread over "offense" feels pretty wrong. Everyone here was clearly told from the jump that insults wouldn't be sanctioned and that nobody actually cares about them. If certain people find it hard to stomach, they’re more than welcome to just stop visiting the thread.

I’ve locked the Temu thread because the insults over there have become constant. I'm planning to spend tonight or tomorrow scrolling through the last 20 pages to ban some users—maybe even issue some partial suspensions if needed. Once that's cleaned up, we can try starting a fresh thread and see if that actually fixes the underlying issues.

I think you're making a massive mistake here. It would be incredibly unfair to hand out warnings or bans based solely on the last twenty pages of this thread. Between the fact that we were told earlier that insults wouldn't be sanctioned, and the long history of toxicity and poor communication from certain users—people who might have been more prominent in the past than they are right now—it just doesn't sit right. Penalizing people based on such a narrow window of time feels completely one-sided.

It’s worth noting that you could probably churn out fifty pages of text on this chat in a single evening if you really got going.

If they had just pulled the trigger on those sanctions right away, we wouldn't be in this mess. Now? It would feel completely unfair to even try.

Regarding those other locked threads, they’re a big deal because you guys basically just took the exact same argument from a closed topic and dragged it right over to a new one.

Why isn't this being handled like it is on other forums, where people actually get handed a warning card?

I’m just hoping they don't go after anyone's livelihood here at the institution; honestly, I think a few warnings and an occasional ban should be more than enough. 😳 At the end of the day, we’re all good people, we just have a tendency to get a little too blunt with our jokes sometimes. 😳

Dana Fox5 said:It’s worth mentioning that you can easily end up with 50 pages of text on a single chat thread in just one evening.

Look, nobody is going to sit there and read through a mountain of posts if you guys just keep cranking them out at that rate. Usually, chat threads are only interesting to the people actually participating in them—and even then, sometimes they aren't even that engaged themselves. That's why most chat threads have to be managed primarily through user reports; it creates a massive amount of headaches, and honestly, we often have to shut them down because the group writing in them just can't seem to keep things under control. So please, just reel it in a bit.

You really have to understand that these chat threads are essentially a "gift." They aren't some fundamental necessity for the site; they exist purely because our moderators are willing to host them, especially since they usually have nothing to do with the main topics of the forum. On top of that, they tend to become little hangouts for a small group, which makes them pretty boring to everyone else, and let's face it, chat threads rarely hold any lasting value. In sections where users don't take advantage of looser moderation—which happens everywhere, by the way—to bully or insult one another, those chat threads can thrive happily for years.

If you were doing what Nathan Turner3 mentioned—basically just dragging a heated argument from one locked thread over to another—then that is a perfectly valid reason to (temporarily) lock that one too. Sometimes we can moderate things without having to shut them down, but other times, it's obvious the group just needs a breather.

On another note: we are fully aware that we're short-staffed on moderators right now, and we are working on fixing that. In the meantime, please don't make our jobs any harder than they already are. 🙂

Usually, off-topic chat threads are only interesting to the people actually participating in them—and sometimes they aren't even interested in the main topic. That’s why most chat threads end up being moderated via user reports; it creates a ton of headaches, which leads to threads getting locked because the group talking can't seem to keep themselves in check. Just show some restraint.

You have to realize that chat threads are essentially a "gift." They aren't a necessity for this site; they exist solely because the moderators are being generous, especially since they usually have nothing to do with the main subject matter. Plus, they often turn into little hangouts for a specific group and can be pretty boring to everyone else. Most chat threads don't hold much long-term value anyway. On boards where users don't exploit lax moderation (and let's face it, moderation is light everywhere) to harass each other, chat threads can thrive for years without any issues.

If, as Nathan Turner3 pointed out, you were just dragging a debate from one locked thread over to another, that’s a perfectly valid reason to temporarily lock that one too. Sometimes things can be handled through moderation without a full lockout, but sometimes it's obvious the group just needs a breather.

On another note: we know we're short on moderators, and we're working on it. In the meantime, please don't make our jobs harder. 🙂

rustydrifter10, I get everything you're saying and, honestly, I agree. Chat threads are a gesture of goodwill, they're loosely moderated, and ultimately, they aren't vital to the site.

However, once a thread has been allowed to progress to a certain point (with rougher language, rule-breaking, etc.), it feels pretty unclear and unfair from a user's perspective when it suddenly gets shut down and people get sanctioned after the fact.

Sure, it's tough to find someone to constantly monitor chats and police inappropriate posts, but what are the users supposed to do? If you want to have a normal conversation but can't because of a few obnoxious people whose insults have been reported multiple times without any action, sometimes the only thing left to do is give them a taste of their own medicine.

If anyone from a controversial chat starts posting in a different thread, the others will follow almost immediately. Then everyone ends up getting chased off and unfairly judged because it’s nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly who is actually causing the trouble.

I actually dealt with a pretty unpleasant situation recently where Jackal followed me through other threads on the site, leaving offensive off-topic comments.

That's why it would be incredibly helpful if someone could find a bit of time and willingness to actually handle the reports regarding indecent posts and deal with the users who consistently write them.

Only then will we stop seeing these messy debates bleeding into other topics, and we can finally have some peace on the all sorts of things board. 🙂

rustydrifter10, would it be possible to set a precedent here and let me try my hand at moderating all sorts of things for a one-week trial period? If anyone happens to file a complaint during that week, or if there is even the slightest hint of bias on my part, you can fire me on the spot—or better yet, I'll just step down myself.

Thanks in advance☕
