Remote Desktop settings guide

I’ve been scouring this entire forum, but I just can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I managed to get Remote Desktop up and running, and everything connected perfectly fine. But here’s the catch: I can't figure out how to set it up so that when I log in to my home PC, I can work in the background—deleting files, doing tasks, whatever—without interrupting the person actually sitting at the computer. I want to be able to work without messing with their screen or getting in their way.

On top of that, every single time I connect, it kicks the local user off their own monitor. Then, once I disconnect from the remote session to get back to my own machine, I have to go through the whole process of logging back in and typing in my password just to see the desktop again. It's such a hassle.

I know this is technically possible. I've seen people mention it, but I have no clue how to pull it off. From what I understand, business owners use this kind of setup to monitor what their employees are doing on their workstations without them even realizing it.

What you’re describing is pretty much how Remote Desktop functions by default—there isn't really anything special you need to tweak there.
The setup you're actually looking for is going to require installing some extra software.

What software are we talking about here??

Alright, I get how RDP works, but that’s not what I’m after here. I need to be able to remote into one computer from my own machine without the other person even realizing I’ve logged on. I want both of us to be able to work on the same device at the exact same time without any interference.
To be more specific:
I have a BluePOS POS system running on Windows XP, and I want to be able to jump onto that machine from a different computer whenever I need to check stats or whatever. The goal is to do this without the servers even noticing I'm there—they need to be able to keep working smoothly on that terminal without being interrupted.
Right now, it's a total pain because I have to stop everything at the register just so I can handle some business from my home computer.
