I had this hard drive sitting in another machine running Linux, but now I'm trying to hook it up to my current PC which is running
Windows 7
. The problem is, the drive just won't mount or open unless I format the whole thing, which obviously isn't an option... Recuva, Remo Recover and Remo Recover failed us both. My brother is actually pretty tech-savvy and he spent a good chunk of time running those programs, but we came up empty-handed. (So yeah, a quick Google search definitely didn't solve anything)
If anyone here has dealt with this specific headache and actually managed to fix it, please let me know. I'm open to suggestions whether they work on Windows or Linux... I really don't care which way we go, as long as it works.

Windows doesn't actually know how to read ext partitions on its own—it just doesn't recognize the Linux format natively.
If you're trying to pull some data off a drive like that, you're gonna need a specific tool that lets Windows understand it, like

Ext2 Installable File System for Windows

Of course, there's the whole question of the original format. If the files are in something super specific to Linux, you won't be able to just convert them easily, but if they're standard formats, you can just copy and paste. Just don't expect to use that drive on Windows seamlessly like it's native; we're talking about two totally different operating systems here, after all.

Thanks, I think I'll give that program a shot too. My main priority right now is just getting all my data off that drive safely, rather than worrying about whether I can get back into Windows 7 without having to wipe everything first...

Of course, I was just giving you an example there. It probably only works on ext2, and honestly, only you know which file system you were running. You’ll need to figure out what you used on Linux first, then hunt down the right software to make that specific file system show up in Windows. These systems aren't exactly "friendly"—they don't recognize anything outside their own formats.
Think of it like needing a driver to "mount" that drive so Windows can actually see it. There isn't some magic converter that turns a Linux drive into a Windows drive with one click.
It actually works the other way around much more easily. You can boot into Linux, mount a Windows drive, and just "dump" your important files onto it using standard tools. Unlike Windows, Linux is way better at playing nice with foreign file systems.

So I was messing around with rooting an Android device today and had to format my microSD to ext2 before copying files over. If you need to mount ext systems, this little utility is pretty handy:

I guess there's no real need to mess with file recovery if the file system is actually fine; honestly, you might just end up making a bigger mess for yourself.

I’m actually related to Jessica Morris6, and honestly, this drive was working perfectly fine before all this—it was formatted as NTFS and had zero issues running on my Windows machines or even over on my Mint XFCE setup,

But now? It’s showing up as completely RAW, and I can't get into it on anything... I've tried multiple Windows builds and different Linux distros, but nothing works. I even tried using GParted on Mint, and it just keeps telling me the disk is unusable and needs to be formatted because the filesystem is corrupted,

I downloaded iCare data recovery from a torrent.
