Seeking some actual wisdom here. I’m requesting that the Admins weigh in on this. ☕

You’ve basically found a loophole in the "law"😬

People are going to remember this as the "Frank Reed4 vs. Reddit case," and everyone is going to start exploiting this 🤣 🤣

There are two purple and two red admins responsible for this PDF. It’s statistically impossible that none of them happen to be online right now. 🙂
Either they're rewriting the rulebook on the fly to claim I'm talking nonsense, or what? 🍿

I know Anderson has switched up his handle a few times himself, so someone else might be better equipped to give you the full rundown on the specifics. 🙂

The forum rules tend to evolve over time—they’re always being tweaked and fine-tuned—so it’s entirely possible the policy on usernames is currently under review too. We might even see some changes regarding signatures, which would finally let you guys get back to customizing them yourselves! 😁 It honestly feels like they’re taking the same cautious approach they did with avatars: giving the moderators a chance to test the waters first and see how everything holds up. It's basically a way to make sure we don't dive headfirst into something that ends up being a total headache down the road. By running this little experiment on a smaller group, it’s much easier for the admins to keep an eye on things and pivot if necessary.

I can’t quite believe you’re trying to experiment with this right now 🤣 It feels like you’ve gone ahead and ignored our own established rules, and honestly, I was under the impression we all played by the same playbook here 😢 🤣

Look, I’m not out here trying to play games with anyone, and from what I can tell, people aren't really experimenting with things like that much anymore anyway. Honestly, I don't even know all the gritty details. Even when rules get bypassed—whether we just delete a post or slap a warning on it instead of handing out a formal strike—I haven't seen anyone actually complaining about it. 😁

But jokes aside, I know Anderson changed his handle a few times before he finally decided to stop, mostly because he's waiting for that new rule he's been cooking up to actually be made public. It's going to drop alongside all those other updates they're planning to roll out to beef up the current rulebook. Until everything is crystal clear and totally transparent, there's just no point in applying things selectively to certain people. That's why he's stopped messing with the nicknames for now.

The original jadetrucker43 account wasn't actually deleted—it just got rebranded as "ex Spectre." But then again, like Nica said, they'll probably fill us in on all the specifics down the road. 😉

We seriously need to find someone on this forum who’s actually willing to step up and act as a spokesperson whenever these kinds of crises hit. I'm sick of us just sitting around waiting hours for some tiny little details to trickle out. 😳

It’s clear you don't get it. My question is whether James Bond villain became an ex villain because that was his choice—considering he hasn't even logged in since 2006—or if it happened because you wanted it to, and you were allowed to make it happen because you're a moderator. 🍿

I'm waiting for someone to tell me the rules apply to everyone equally, regardless of whether they're blue, black, red, purple, or green. By the way, it would be helpful if Tyndall actually wrote something, just so we can see where he stands on all this. He changes nicknames, doesn't he? 🙂

Nica made a good point that this was just an experiment from Anderlon, rather than moderators just doing whatever they want. I'll share a bit more, assuming Anderlon won't mind. Just trying to clear the air here.

As weird as it sounds, this wasn't done out of some whim by Spectre, nor is it about special treatment. Spectre was basically the guinea pig for Anderlon's experiment, just like Nica mentioned.

If you look at the threads where people request name changes, there's a huge group of users who might actually benefit from this. It happens all the time where someone wants a name like Nicole, but it's been sitting idle since 2006 with maybe zero or five posts. People end up registering as Nicole_1011 or Nicole_1903 because the simple version is taken. We've seen those requests before. And honestly, nobody would bother changing a name with a high post count. Let's say, 20 posts or more. This is really just about inactive accounts with almost no history.

That was the whole idea behind the experiment: to see if this change was even possible or useful in practice for everyone. Not just for mods, but for any user. I don't want anyone thinking I'm pushing to make this permanent; I'm not. As far as I know, that's not happening. Whether it becomes a thing or not is entirely up to Anderlon.

So, you can stop ganging up on Spectre now. He’s innocent. 😁

Anyway, let's wait for Tyndall to say something more. ☕

Tyndall?

Wait, what happens if an inactive user like Nicole decides to jump back into the fray using their old handle? For instance, I was MIA for about two years before deciding to start posting again, and honestly, I just couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of setting up a brand-new profile. Then you have someone like Spectre, who is now essentially an ex-Spectre... If a person tries to log in with their former username without realizing it’s been changed, what actually happens?

From what I understand, when you log in for the first time after a change, a notification pops up letting you know what the new handle is. I’ve actually mentioned to the admins that I'm personally not a huge fan of this approach, even though the intention was only to rename people who have been gone for ages and barely have any posts—I think they were looking at something like over five years of inactivity combined with a single-digit post count as the threshold.

The conversation also touched on how we could lighten the load on the server by deleting old, inactive profiles while keeping all their posts visible (which would effectively free up those old usernames if someone else wanted them). But that discussion didn't really gain much traction, and everyone decided to set that aside for now until we tackle some other, more pressing issues.

What happens if someone tries to log in with their old handle without realizing it’s been changed?

They’ll just fail to log in. From there, they might search for their old handle and find the "new" version since it looks similar, recognizing the change by the avatar, post count, or join date. They might also just make a new account and reach out. These are exactly the kinds of complications that make implementation difficult. That's why this was just a trial run. It wasn't done for fun; the idea was to benefit the active users who are actually here, posting and hanging out. At first glance, it seems harsh toward those whose names were changed, but those people aren't around. Maybe they'll never show up, maybe they don't even remember their old handle, maybe they made a new one they like better, or maybe they're busy at Trkeljanjing, you name it. 😁

Someone might show up, or nobody will, since this test was only applied to accounts the forum hasn't seen in years (we haven't touched or even thought about touching anyone inactive for two or three years). Since they're inactive, they're effectively gone, so the idea was to let active users claim unused handles if they wanted them. There's some logic to it, and besides, Anderlon is the owner and can decide if these changes actually help current members.
I don't really want to dwell on it. Like I said, it was just Anderlon's experiment, and it feels a bit silly for me to talk about it when I can't give an official answer. I just wanted to point out that there's no need to attack the moderators; this wasn't some special treatment for favorites like it seemed. That's all.

Edit: I see Nica provided an answer I wasn't aware of—there's a notification sent immediately regarding any changes.

I appreciate both of you for such thorough responses. 🙂

I just figured it might be a bit much to simply delete people without even giving them a chance to realize their handle had been changed, but I’m just curious about how the technical side of things works... Since, as it happens, I registered that way myself and then drifted away from the forum for a while before returning. Not that anyone is out to claim my specific username, but still... 😁

An experiment is fine, nothing too heavy, but let's not act surprised when people react or ask questions—especially those who are sensitive to any hint of an abuse of power. It’s perfectly natural for folks to feel uneasy seeing privileges granted to some that aren't available to us, particularly since, by sheer coincidence, none other than the newly minted Spectre was in charge of these name changes. And naturally, we weren't given any heads-up about these new features. You're already getting defensive, but honestly, you should be glad people are staying vigilant against potential overreach; it's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights, duties, and the importance of maintaining control over one's space, identity, actions, body, handle, and avatar within this digital jungle. 😁

I think I can finally log in normally now. Look, nobody intended for anything bad to happen or for anyone to get hurt here, but I totally see why there’s a gray area when you consider someone might actually want to get back into their account. That said, the rule shouldn't apply to anyone with a significant post count or anyone who's been active within the last few years. The concept itself isn't necessarily bad, it just needs a lot more fine-tuning before it's set in stone.

Look, an experiment is fine—it's not the end of the world—but please don't act surprised when people start questioning things or getting sensitive about potential abuses of power. It’s completely natural for people to feel uneasy seeing certain permissions granted to some while we're left in the dark, especially since, by total coincidence, it turns out Spectre was the one tasked with handling these nickname changes.

I really don't blame anyone; it's perfectly reasonable to have questions when sudden changes happen without any heads-up. 🙂

The goal wasn't to discriminate against anyone; we just didn't want to go public with this phase while the final decisions on who gets changed and when are still pending. We aren't quite sure how the mechanics will work yet, though we don't anticipate major issues. We honestly believe it's better to move slowly and establish a concrete, formal policy that applies to everyone equally, rather than rolling this out en masse with such vague guidelines.

Oh, naturally, none of us were given any notice regarding these new capabilities. And wow, look at that immediate defensiveness! Honestly, you should be glad that people are staying vigilant against potential power trips; that's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights and responsibilities. It shows people care about their identity, their presence, and their digital footprint in this virtual zoo. 😁

If we stay silent, we're accused of ignoring the issue. If we respond, we're accused of being defensive. 🙄 ☕ 😁 It feels like you can't win with you guys. 😳 😁

The reason you haven't been notified is that a final decision hasn't been reached yet. But once it is, we promise we'll let you know. 🙂

Why was I never chosen as a test subject? I remember posting on that thread about changing my handle because there was some guy named Shadow who hadn't been active in forever, blah blah blah. Now, all of a sudden, he’s back in action. I have no idea what triggered this. Did you guys go ahead and reactivate him yourselves, or what? 😂
Lest I forget, it would be an absurd notion for anyone to think about changing usernames once they’ve already built up a significant post count. It just doesn't make sense. I'll go ahead and throw out a figure here, purely off the top of my head—let's say twenty posts or more—and that's where the line should be drawn.

Spectre used to have 21 posts. Just sitting there. Looking back on it now. I remember when things were different. Back then, everything felt more straightforward, less cluttered. Now? It’s all just noise. Anyway, that was the count. 21. Not much, but it was what it was. ☕ I'm feeling pretty down about that number 30. It’s hard to swallow when Frank Reed4 is sitting there with a 34. Just one of those days, I suppose.
Now you can finally take the noose off Spectre; they were about to hang an innocent man. 😁

I’m not looking to hang anyone out to dry here. I’m simply pointing out certain irregularities and injustices. It’s painfully obvious that even among equals, there are those who hold more weight than others—and now, it seems they're all trying to pull a fast one by hiding behind these "experiment" excuses. And honestly? I find this whole experiment concept incredibly murky. If the goal was to see if Spectre....Do I need to change my handle since he's acting as a moderator? Or does a different procedure apply for someone in that position? 🍿
Not necessarily. Let's just hold off and wait for Tyndall to weigh in with some more details. ☕

Tyndall?

Yeah, exactly. But Tyndall?

So, this whole conversation about changing usernames just kind of exploded—I honestly don't know exactly when it spiraled into its own thread because it’s been such a whirlwind to follow—but basically, Anderlon suggested something along the lines of, "Hey, why don't we make a rule where people can change their handles if their original ones have been inactive for a long time and they only have a handful of posts?" A few people chimed in saying it was a great idea, so then everyone started brainstorming how to actually write that into our existing rules. Then Spectre asked if he could change his without using a period since it fit within those new guidelines, and Anderlon said sure and went ahead and did it! After that, someone else requested a change, and then a few other folks who were eligible changed theirs too, simply because they wanted to. Then someone jumped in to argue that we shouldn't be changing names like that at all. And right as things were heating up, I started that thread about account amnesties, and everything else just kind of got pushed to the back burner. 😁 Or maybe I'm misremembering the timing? 🤔

Anyway, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit 😁, it wasn't quite that chaotic, but that's pretty much the gist of it. The discussion about name changes kicked off because we wanted to be accommodating to our active community members, especially since we get so many requests regarding accounts from people who haven't posted in ages or barely ever posted to begin with. There's no conspiracy or anything crazy going on here; we just paused things for a moment until we can get back to the more important stuff. 🙂
