Look, what I’m dealing with right now is just plain ridiculous—I have two Samsung burners, one is about 8 months old and the other is 6. A few days ago, they both just... started acting up. Specifically, neither one will burn a DVD correctly! When the process finishes, the computer tells me the disc was burned successfully, but then the moment I pop it into a player or try it on another PC—it might play for a minute, but then it just freezes up and dies... and if you look at the surface of the DVD, the burn isn't even! At first, I was convinced my computer had some nasty virus, but I’ve ruled that out—ran scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, even went as far as nuking the whole system and doing a fresh install of Windows 7, which fixed everything else... except for these burners failing to write properly. Interestingly, when I tried burning a CD, it worked perfectly without any errors! I really need some advice here... I go through a lot of media—about 15 DVDs a week—so since I feel like I've exhausted every troubleshooting step, I need to know if I should just bite the bullet and head down to Best Buy for two brand-new burners or if there's something else going on!?!

Just pop your roaster model into Google along with the word "firmware"—if you see a newer update available, go ahead and install it 🙂

Have you thought about switching up the media you're burning to? I’ve got a Samsung burner myself—honestly, it’s been a total workhorse—and I’ve rarely run into issues; it handled basically 99% of the stuff I threw at it without breaking a sweat.

I already tried that—it did absolutely nothing!

I almost exclusively use VERBATIM, though I did give TDK and TRAXDATA a shot—but nope, it's the exact same headache with every single one of them...

Then just spit $50 for a new optical drive—maybe then we won't have any more issues. 🙂

Both of them should still be under warranty, so you might want to file a claim.

I picked up a brand new one, and honestly, it was working flawlessly... until it absolutely fried eight DVDs in a row! Now, this second one? It spends half an hour just burning through a single disc—it’s maddening! I simply cannot wrap my head around what on earth is going wrong here...

I’m guessing it might be a SATA issue—have you tried swapping out the cable or plugging it into a different SATA port?
What software are you running?

Could it be overheating? You need sufficient clearance from other components, like an HDD, to allow for airflow—maybe about an inch or two of space.
This isn't designed for non-stop use. If you burn one DVD, wait at least three minutes before starting the next one.
The case ventilation should be adequate, allowing air to flow from the bottom toward the top or rear.

It’s also possible the case quality is subpar. If the screws are too tight, the burner might malfunction. Try loosening them slightly.
Since this is an optical drive and the chassis lacks structural integrity, it is highly susceptible to warping.

Your SATA cable might be faulty; try a different one. Even the power cable could have a loose connection.
