There’s a new cinematic spin on the old fairy tale, this one titled Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
It’s a gritty action flick set years after the original story ends... basically picking up right after that traumatic childhood experience that turned them into hardened bounty hunters.
Directed by Tommy Wirkol, the film hits theaters on March 2, 2012.

Catching up with Hansel and Gretel 15 years after The traumatic incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into vengeful bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them. Now, Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid The town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress Who is planning to sacrifice many local children AT The witches during the upcoming 'Blood Moon' night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer Who Has taken Power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare

If it weren't for the fact that MGM is involved, I probably would have assumed this was some cheap production from Asylum. It’s honestly getting a bit ridiculous, the way they've been messing around with those fairy tales lately...

I honestly can't wait, though it feels like lately they're just churning out movies based on old fairy tales, albeit with a much more modernized twist. 😁

They’re really going all in on fairy tales lately.

I’m just sitting here waiting for Cinderella to turn into some kind of serial killer or something...😬

I can't wait! It's basically a fairy tale—plus, we've got Renner in the lead... 😍

And let's be honest, Famke Janssen is totally playing the wicked witch! 🤣

But yeah, it definitely sounds intriguing to me... fingers crossed they push the envelope a bit more and don't just stick to a standard PG-13 rating.

Nah, she’s still stealing things and isn't quite ready for action yet! 🤣

If anyone is wondering where her source material comes from...

Anyway... I don't know... looking at the trailer now, it feels a bit... more geared toward kids? Even though it carries an R rating, which makes me really curious to see what actually jumps out of the woods at them. Regardless, I think I'll give the movie a watch, though probably not in a theater. 🙂

The trailer looks awesome to me. It's got that high-budget action-trash vibe, which is honestly exactly my kind of thing 😁

Auu, man, I am loving this! As soon as I saw the poster and realized we were talking about Hansel and Gretel, I knew this was going to be freaking awesome! 👍

This looks like a total winner, though I really just hope it doesn't turn out to be some absolute piece of shit and actually delivers as a solid, fun fairy tale movie.

Honestly, it’s gotten way too good.
I totally get where you're coming from, and honestly, I'm all for just taking a classic tale like this and putting it on screen exactly as it is—especially since today's tech makes it so much easier to pull off.
But hey, it is what it is, and I'm cool with it either way.

edit:

WOW! I just watched the trailer and it seriously blew me away—like, it knocked me ten feet back and landed me right on my ass! 🙏 This is gonna be epic; I am absolutely obsessed with this trailer.
The little house, the witch on a broomstick... wooohoo! Can't wait, man!

And you're right about Rose—there's already enough chatter in the trades suggesting that Gemma Arterton might take on the villainous fairy godmother role, playing opposite her four-year-old daughter Princess Aurora from back in the day.
As for the Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters movie, judging by the trailer, I actually have a feeling it might turn out to be a pretty solid flick.

I just watched the trailer and I have to say, my opinion has shifted. It doesn't look half bad, actually, and I suppose it somewhat reminds me of Van Helsing, though I might add that I actually found that movie rather enjoyable. 😁
