It's basically this,

A friend of mine needs an LGA 1156 motherboard because the USB ports on his current one just gave out.πŸ™‚

We tried searching on eBay, but came up empty. I don't quite get itβ€”why is it so hard to find these? There are only a few listings available, and even then, they're usually bundled with a processor.

His CPU is an i5 750, though I suppose that might fit an LGA 1155 socket instead; sorry, I am not entirely sure about that.

Are there any new ones actually available for purchase?

It’s a rare socket because nobody really wants to part with them while they're still running high-end CPUs. It won't fit into an LGA 1155 slot, and I can't seem to find any new ones for sale anywhere... I guess your only real option is to ask someone selling a full rig if they'll throw in a motherboard, though they could probably just get more value by breaking it down into individual parts 😬

Honestly, money isn't his main issue here. That motherboard he blew out cost him $667, and it had some ridiculous red skull design on itβ€”pretty tacky if you ask me. His overclock was sitting at 4.2GHz, too.

We managed to track something down on eBay. He’s a bit hesitant about buying parts like that online, but I guess he won't have much of a choice.

And which motherboard are we talking about?

Don't be cluelessβ€”just grab a PCI USB card. You can find them at $17 and a dozen other places, and that'll solve your problem

Spot on and accurate.

I find it hard to believe that every single USB chip failed. How is that even possible?
Could the issue lie within the driver or the Windows Registry?

Is there a point to this?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I ended up ordering a Gigabyte model off eBay for about $60.

By the way, it wasn't just an issue with the USB ports; sometimes it would act up during boot-up too. I flashed a new BIOS, but that didn't help, and I checked the capacitorsβ€”they seem fine.

It was clearly caused by excessive overclocking over a long period. This one from eBay is new, likely old stock. It isn't exactly a high-end overclocking model, but I expect it to perform well enough.
