Hey everyone!

So, here's the deal: my girlfriend just went to her doctor for a routine swab, right? Well, the results came back positive for Ureaplasma—honestly, I have zero clue what that even is, other than being some kind of bacteria... I mean, I'm a guy, what do I know? 🙂 She was prescribed Doxycycline to take twice a day for 12 days.

Now, she’s convinced that I’ve got it too—basically saying I'm a carrier and that I need to go on the meds at the exact same time as her. I did a little digging into this stuff online, and honestly, I'm a bit hesitant about just blasting my system with antibiotics if I don't actually need them!
My questions for you guys are:
-Should I just go ahead and take the Doxycycline along with her, even if I haven't seen a doctor myself? (I'd really rather skip the clinic visit because, let's be real, those tests can be a pain.)
-Is this medication actually harmful if I end up taking it when I don't even have the bacteria?
-If it turns out I *do* have it, will 12 days of treatment actually clear it all up?

I'd really appreciate any insight you guys can share.

Thanks a ton!!

Man, next time just use a normal font size instead of a six. Honestly, the way you have it now makes those questions you were trying to highlight stand out way too much. 🙂

That looked incredible, I almost passed out just looking at it. 😁

Look, honestly, the smartest move is to go get a swab test first. You need to know if you actually have it and which specific antibiotics will even touch it.

If you don't bother with the testing, you could always try getting a prescription for the same stuff she’s taking, though I'm not sure if her OBGYN can write that for you or if you'll have to see a GP. But hey, a drug is a drug, right? So many people take antibiotics for nothing when they really just have a virus, and this is no different. Nobody can tell you how your body will react or what kind of side effects you might deal with.

Ureaplasma is a real pain in the ass. Sometimes you have to go through several rounds of treatment, so nobody can promise you that one course will be enough to clear it up.

Also, why on earth are you posting this in women's health 😁? I'm pretty sure there's a dedicated health thread. I'll go check; if there is, I'll move your posts over with mine. 🙂

edit: No thread exists, but I'll go ahead and fix that. 😬

Okay, fine—I guess I'll just go ahead and do this round of treatment along with her. I mean, if she's got it, I probably do too since we share a bed, right?!

Thanks so much!!

So what's the deal there? Like, am I stuck either taking the meds blindly, or if I want to be 100% sure, I have to go get a swab test??😢
Is there any other way to actually find out if I've got this thing?

Look, it’s not like you have to pick up every single thing a woman carries, and she doesn't necessarily have to pick up everything from you either. Honestly, you guys tend to have it a bit easier than we do because certain things, like Candida, can be a lot harder for women to shake off.

The only way to know for sure is to get a swab. There's no other way around it. Unless, of course, you just want to start taking pills blindly.

As for the swab itself—some guys on here have already posted in different threads about how they do it, how much it hurts, all that stuff. From what I’ve read, the reality is a little awkward, but it doesn't actually hurt. You might feel a tiny bit of stinging later when you pee, but that passes quickly. It’s really not that big of a deal, so I don't get why you're so worked up over a simple swab. 🙂

edit: found the thread, give it a read: Urethral swab

Get a damn urethral swab done so we can actually see what we're dealing with—there’s clearly something going on in there.

Well, now that you sent him the link to that thread, he’s probably stuck there forever. He’s not going anywhere now. 😁

northernwolf15Look, despite some of the horror stories floating around this thread—which are honestly a massive exaggeration—there’s really no reason to be terrified of getting a swab. Yeah, it’s uncomfortable and it stings, but it’s definitely not the nightmare people make it out to be. My guy had a urethral swab done (they used four swabs) and he said sure, it hurts, but it’s totally manageable and over before you know it. You might deal with some minor stinging when you pee later that day, but that’s about it. I mean, getting a cavity filled sucks too, but you still show up to the dentist, right?

Sure, you can just wing it with antibiotics if you want, but how are you even gonna know if the bacteria actually cleared out? My advice? Just get a swab test done. If the results come back clean, then stick to using condoms with your girl until she’s fully cleared too.

Honestly, my partner and I have been fighting this Ureaplasma battle for years now, and let me tell you, it’s anything but harmless—at least in our experience. This bacterium is incredibly stubborn and just refuses to budge. If your girlfriend has it, there is a 100% chance you have it too; you might actually be the primary carrier. Regarding the swabs, my partner gets tested all the time and says it’s really no big deal—just a tiny bit of discomfort and then it's over. It doesn't hurt at all. We have cycled through almost every antibiotic imaginable without successfully getting rid of it. Our last attempt was with Doxycycline 12 (we’ve used it before), and this time, my results finally came back negative. Thank God, because I am currently 5.5 months pregnant. He hasn't gone in for his follow-up yet, and since I had already cleared my infection while he hadn't, we weren't being careful enough and I ended up catching it again. I say it isn't "harmless" because I lost a baby at 5 months last year; I developed a severe infection, and looking back, Ureaplasma was most likely the culprit.
Please, stay persistent and good luck!!

Is it even possible for chlamydia symptoms to pop up just a day after having sex?
All I'm feeling right now is this occasional, kind of mild itchy stinging sensation in my urethra near the scrotum, plus a little bit of a painful sting at the tip when I pee... though honestly, it feels more like a burning heat in that area rather than actual pain, if that makes sense..
Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong spot or whatever..

Hey everyone. So, I’ve finally been hit by this stupid Ureaplasma nonsense too. Got a positive swab back about two weeks ago. I knocked back some Doxycycline for a week, but honestly? Nothing. I’m still dealing with all the same symptoms... intense lower abdominal pain, that constant burning when I pee, and occasional discharge. I'm at my wit's end here, I just don't know what else to do 😢.

Hey everyone!
I honestly feel like Chlamydia is becoming this massive, growing epidemic here in the States. I’ve actually heard a few doctors mentioning at medical conferences that the strain is becoming "stubborn" and way harder to wipe out than it used to be. And look, full disclosure—I’m one of those people currently stuck in this nightmare. For years! After my first urethral swab came back positive, I jumped straight onto Doxycycline, then moved on to a second round of therapy, then a third, even stronger antibiotic, and yet here I am, still dealing with this crap. I just had another swab a couple of days ago and—surprise, surprise—positive again! I am losing my freaking mind here. The symptoms never change; it's just constant bladder pressure, issues when I pee, and discomfort during sex... and the worst part is, I don't even know where the hell I caught it in the first place!! Has anyone else actually managed to kick this thing for good?🙂
Seriously, any advice would be a lifesaver!

Hey everyone!
Or maybe I should say hey ladies =) because it looks like this thread—much like the bacteria itself—is pretty much geared toward women. I’m not entirely sure, but I think I might be the first guy posting here.

Anyway... Ureaplasma. It’s been a year and a half now. I feel like I've cycled through every antibiotic under the sun (Doxycycline, tetracycline...) and it's still hanging around. I can feel it. I'm headed in for a swab in a day or two, fully expecting it to still show up. "Little beast" is honestly a perfect way to describe them.
It’s definitely clear that this thing affects women more than men, but what I really want to know is—since it seems like there aren't many guys in this group (ladies, please tell us how your partners are doing)—did the guys actually have symptoms? Did you notice anything different while they were dealing with it?

Just to be totally honest so I'm not questioning things for no reason: I definitely have it. There's nothing else it could be. My main issue is extreme sensitivity at the tip (from any kind of external contact), sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes it doesn't even feel good; it just hurts. And we all know how that ends...

So, that's the gist. This time, the prince needs some help from the ladies in distress =)

Best regards!
