I’m not looking to complain—honestly, I don't have much to complain about since I usually just browse the expat section every once in a while... but today I saw a post that actually made me want to say a few words.
First off, can we please loosen up the moderation on the expat boards? It feels like the expat section is the only place where you aren't allowed even a tiny bit of casual chat. As soon as a conversation gets even slightly interesting, someone jumps in with a warning to get back to the topic. At the same time, Scott, take this as a friendly heads-up: you don't have any trouble chatting about food in the culinary threads where I see you posting. Personally, I don't mind; feel free to chat away, but the double standard is a bit much for me. Why is side-chatting in the food section totally fine, even when it barely touches the topic? For us expats, who are scattered all over the US by definition, we don't really have a space to talk—to vent about the tax hikes they slapped on us, or ask how things are going in other states, or mention spending all day in an ER and asking if others have had similar experiences, or why Australians can only chat with Australians and Italians with Italians, etc. Why do we have to stick so strictly and blindly to a specific topic without the right to start a thread to continue a conversation? It’s like people think we only know how to talk about politics and old historical grudges. Sure, we used to bicker about those things, but people bicker on other boards too, even on non-political, benign topics, and they don't get treated like a police state the way we do living outside the States.

I also want to appeal to the admins to lift Will's ban from the expat board. I saw his post before it was deleted, and I really don't want to read anyone saying a man is "dying without the diaspora and writing on the expat boards." Let me mention the food thread again, which also has its own regular who spams topics and types even when he has nothing to say, yet he's tolerated because he's older, lonely, and probably out of touch. I know Will is temperamental; sometimes he doesn't know how to control himself because he types before he thinks when he's called out, and he can be unpleasant. But he also gathered info for everyone looking for data on moving to Australia. He always came back to the expat board, whether he was being insulted, whether he was insulting others, or when he decided to leave... he always came back because the forum is his outlet, and it’s certainly more necessary for him than it is for most of us who packed up and moved...
Even in moments when Will didn't hold back his words against me, I never wished a ban on him, let alone a permanent one. He doesn't bother me; he never did. Sure, he occasionally typed like he was vaccinated against humor, and his crusade for "the truth" was sometimes bordering on absurd, but then again, there are enough handles on this forum that they’ll keep typing regardless of their bans.
Try to imagine life far from the country you emigrated from—balancing the books, weighing the pros and cons, dealing with illness, and finding a little distraction and joy in typing on a forum. Are you truly 100% sure the expat board became a better or more pleasant place just because Will isn't here? Do you really not mind reading that a 70-year-old man is dying without his hobby—typing on the expat boards?
Personally, I feel for him and I get it. We are generations apart and geographically distant, but if my father were still alive, he probably wouldn't act much differently from him, or from any of those old regulars in the food threads who simply think they're right because of their age and their lack of experience with new technology.

I remember someone once wrote that you shouldn't advocate for Will, and I accept the possibility of being banned myself... at the end of the day, this forum doesn't mean as much to me as it does to him. And honestly, is it worth being a member of a forum that treats its members living outside the US so rigidly, when all they want is to exchange a few words with people in the same boat, just on a different coast?
Thanks! ☕

I’m signing off on everything said here. Honestly, this whole diaspora vibe is just way too stiff—zero chill. Parim is basically heading straight to Alcatraz for this forum. And Ranković is acting like he’s some kind of high-fashion model
sticking his legs up
looking dead ahead
it’s bad for your health
left, left
don't even try
left, left
hold onto your hats
voooood, hold it right there!
absolutely wild

Honestly, I think it might be a little late for that.

Plus, that next sentence feels a bit bizarre given the context here.

I’m honestly baffled by how obsessed people are with Vilk. I mean, he was always a handful on this forum, but lately? It’s gotten weird. Most of the time he’s just being insulting or making snarky comments, and then suddenly he pulls the "I'm sick" card to get out of things. It's constant. If you're actually feeling that bad, why even bother posting? Just stay offline. Instead, he lashes out at someone and then follows it up with, "Oh, sorry, I wasn't feeling well, I'm really struggling right now..." only to repeat the whole cycle a few times a week. 🙄

And don't even get me started on the fact that even the moderators have mentioned receiving some pretty nasty messages from him... 🤷

Things have actually loosened up a bit on the Diaspora side regarding la Luna. Look, I get that casual chatting isn't the main goal here, but as far as I can tell, nobody is throwing a fit just because a few posts stray slightly from the strict topic at hand—especially when they aren't being argumentative or trolling. We aren't going to start opening up dedicated chat threads on the Diaspora forum either, because, let's be honest, that hasn't worked out well in the past.

The ban on Vilk is staying put. It wasn't just a case of a well-meaning older gentleman spamming because he was a little lost; his behavior was actually much more destructive than that. I truly feel for him regarding his health issues and everything he's going through personally—I sincerely wish nothing but the best for him and his family—but that doesn't give him a free pass to tear down the PDF or disrespect people in discussions.

Since that whole situation is now closed, we aren't going to dwell on him or his biases any further.

Regarding the Foodie subforum, it seems like chatting is allowed, and honestly, I don't feel like I'm drifting off-topic any more than anyone else here. The moderators there are fantastic—they’re always on top of things, either splitting threads or just deleting stuff if it gets out of hand. I won't call names, but there are people on the Foodie board who just spam unrelated photos or duplicate posts constantly, and nobody even complains about it. If a discussion starts leaning slightly away from the main subject, but the mods decide it doesn't need its own thread, I'm perfectly happy to just read along.

The real issue with the Diaspora section is that instead of actually talking about the topics in the titles, everything just turns into petty bickering, insults, and massive amounts of spamming.
I'm certainly not the first moderator to say "no" to a chat thread, and Kika and the other girls after her felt exactly the same way.
The users on Foodie and the Diaspora boards are very different vibes, though lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of high-quality people showing up—people who actually contribute useful info and stay on track, which is really nice to see.
Of course, you can talk about taxes or what life is like in Italy or Iceland. Feel free to jump into whatever thread interests you and ask folks how they're doing; nobody's going to stop you from doing that.

Go ahead and joke around as much as you want. I haven't seen myself jumping down the throats of the users chatting in Canada or Australia since we stopped all that nationalistic insulting and cleared out some of the biggest trolls and spammers.
Which brings me to Vilk.

There is a lot of stuff you guys don't know about what Vilko does on this forum regularly—not to mention the gross stuff he still sends via private message, not just to me, but to former moderators too.
Vilk has been persistently breaking the rules even after warnings, trolling, using multiple accounts, and being insulting, which isn't tolerated on any forum under the sun. And don't even get me started on those fake profiles he makes, pretending to be his son or wife and all that creepy stuff.

Why not start a chat thread over on the diaspora board? Ever since I opened a few chat topics in the Tourism section, things have been way easier to moderate—plus, people are actually sticking to the right topics much better now...

Like the person who started this whole thread said, the diaspora loves nothing more than picking on its own. And honestly? It’s often pretty brutal and just plain unsportsmanlike. We've seen a few attempts at chatting here, but most of them just end up spiraling into people cloning accounts, trolling, or just being toxic for no reason.
Someone would literally have to babysit this topic 24/7 just to deal with the non-constructive nonsense. A few moderators tried to make it work, but it was a losing battle. la Luna and I actually talked about the idea of dedicated monitoring, but we eventually decided it was better to just let it go.

Vilko, there’s nothing left to say.
Please refrain from any further spamming in this thread.

The Global Diaspora Chat just doesn't make sense right now.
A moderator's job isn't to play cop—standing guard over the chat to make sure nobody starts bickering or counting individual red blood cells.
The whole chat concept just hasn't worked.

Maybe one day it will... and you guys, who have been on this forum longer, can see that the crowd is changing—the way people talk and their actual interests are shifting.
Once the trolls and clones aren't flooding the Global Diaspora Chat in the numbers they are now—once people can talk about food or local news without getting insulted—then maybe the chat will come back.
That time hasn't arrived yet.
How do we know?
Well, just by looking at the tone of discussions on more sensitive topics.

Nobody is stopping you from, say, being in Chicago and dropping a comment in a thread meant for socializing about Canada or Australia. Nobody is stopping you from sharing experiences from another country—like discussing Tax matters or comparing systems—within existing threads. As long as the discussion stays relevant and doesn't devolve into sports betting or what you had for lunch yesterday. 😉

Again, I'll say it: if you really want to talk exclusively about off-topic stuff, use the off-topic subforum and start a thread there.
And again, since most users didn't fit into the specific chats for certain countries, having an off-topic chat thread works just fine.

But there won't be a Global Diaspora Chat.

As for Will, everything has already been said.
Old age, illness, sad life stories, and things like that ARE NOT and CANNOT BE a justification for constantly and repeatedly breaking the rules. That's on par with someone losing their mind and attacking half the neighborhood, only for the neighbors to gasp and say, "But he was such a model citizen..."
He was.
That was the past.
Will's way of communicating is malicious and destructive.
It's the same deal with Chad: the second his behavior and writing style actually change, the permanent ban will be lifted.
Until then, the decision stands.

And honestly, we don't even have an issue with strictly keeping threads on topic here.
At least in my personal experience, and even Peter Doyle2 has loosened the reins a bit.

Our problem is the trolls and the clones.
A chat thread won't fix that; if anything, it will just fuel the fire.
Besides, there are already social threads for the countries where most of our people live.

There isn't just one global chat thread.

And there won't be.
