So, I’ve got this sound card, the

paired up with an M5A97 R 2.0 motherboard

It worked perfectly fine on my old rig.

But now, when I plug it into the new board and try to load the drivers, I just get a BSOD on Windows 7. And on Windows 8? It just keeps rebooting until I have to perform a full system restore just to get back into the OS.
I actually tried swapping it into a few other newer boards—even an ASRock one—but, well, no luck there either.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I don't think it's a software issue, honestly... I've pretty much cycled through every driver available.
One thing that really caught my eye in the specs was this:
3.3V / 5V compatible PCI card

Is it possible that modern motherboards have different voltage levels in the PCI slot? Like, maybe it's too high or too low?
And if that is the case, is there any way to actually control or fix that?

Any advice at all would be huge. This sound card is way too good to toss, and I definitely don't have the cash to drop $400 on a new one right now. $667.

So, what’s the actual error code popping up on the BSOD? Also—just a thought—maybe try not using it as your default playback device for a bit.

I don't know, I can't quite remember. It was back when I was running Windows 7. Now I've moved on to Windows 8 and it just keeps rebooting on me. Hmm, I think I might have already tried that, but I guess I'll give it another shot. Or maybe I didn't. Who knows.

Looking at this, my card doesn't have the 64-bit slot :S the slot on my specific card looks way smaller.
Could that actually be the issue? Like, older versions of Windows were 32-bit while the newer ones are 64-bit.

Even though they do offer drivers for both 32 and 64-bit systems.

64-bit PCI-X slots are basically relics at this point—you'd mostly find them on server boards used for RAID controllers back in the day. As for those two boards you mentioned, they both have 5V PCI slots, so from a physical standpoint, you shouldn't run into any issues. Plus, the card itself works in a 3.3V slot too, and since those boards have two slots available, you’re covered either way. From what I've gathered over on the ESI forums, though, getting drivers to work on Windows 7/8 is a total nightmare—it looks like people are just slapping old Windows XP drivers on there and praying it works... pretty pathetic, honestly.
